Once he was gone, Elena picked up a glass of orange juice from a passing server and casually surveyed the
room.
The ballroom buzzed with conversation, packed with industry people. Actors, producers, investors, influencers. Plenty of faces she recognized from late–night shows and streaming platforms.
Her marriage to Alexander hadn’t gone public beyond Pinnacle Group, so to everyone here, she was just another unfamiliar guest. No one gave her a second glance.
Which made things easier.
She moved through the crowd at an unhurried pace, eyes scanning until she spotted him.
Landon.
He stood out immediately. Tall, sharp in a black suit, the kind of presence that naturally drew people in. A small crowd surrounded him, all trying to get a word in.
He handled it effortlessly, smiling, nodding, saying just enough. Polished. Charming.
The kind of guy you’d trust within five minutes.
Which is exactly what makes him dangerous.
Eventually, the group broke apart.
Landon checked his phone, a faint smile tugging at his lips, then looked up and headed in a specific direction.
Elena followed his line of sight.
A young woman sat alone on a couch nearby, clutching a champagne flute like she didn’t quite know what to do with it. Her posture was stiff, her eyes darting around.
It was her first industry event, her first time in a room like this, and it showed.
Landon spotted it immediately.
He didn’t hesitate, just walked straight over like he’d already decided how this was going to go. He leaned in, said something low enough that no one else could hear.
The girl’s face flushed on
the spot.

Elena didn’t look up. She lowered
her
gaze to her phone, her thumb moving like she was casually texting someone back. In one smooth motion, she switched to thera, adjusted the angle just enough to frame
No shutter sound. No obvious movement.
She was just about to slide her phone away, like nothing had happened when a hand suddenly closed around her wrist.
“Well, well. Elena. Didn’t expect to see you here,”
She had come out of nowhere, her grip tight, nails digging in.
“Let go.” Elena said, shaking her off.
Camille’s eyes, dark with heavy makeup, were burning. “Do you even realize Nathan’s leg is messed up because of you?”
So they’re back together. Figures.
Elena tilted her head slightly, not surprised. With Hawthorne Group slipping out of N. nds, he
needed someone to anchor himself to. Camille made sense.
“How is that on me?” Elena said, her tone cool. “He picked a fight he couldn’t win.”
It wasn’t her problem. It never had been. She turned to leave, ready to put the whole thing behind her, but Camille let out a sharp, almost deliberate laugh and suddenly raised her voice, loud enough to cut through the room.
“Mr. Hawke, she was just taking pictures of you!”
The shift was immediate. Conversations dipped, a few heads turned, and the attention in the room tilted their way.
Landon
beforeover, the easy smile on his face fading as he said something to the woman beside him
straight toward them.
Then his gaze landed on Elena, turning cold and assessing, like he was already trying to figure her out.
“What’s going
on here?” he asked when he reached them, his voice smooth but stripped of warmth.
Camille crossed her arms, righteous and loud. “She was sneaking photos of you. And she’s supposed to be editor–in–chief at Velmora Media. Acting like some gossip blogger? Seriously embarrassing.”
“That’s not your business,” Elena said flatly.
She looked at Landon. “I was on my phone. Taking a call. That allowed, or do you screen that too?”
Landon’s gaze sharpened. “A call?”
“Oh please.” Camille cut in. “I saw you. Don’t even try that.”
She reached for Elena’s phone.

Elena didn’t hesitate. Her hand came up fast and clean. The slap echoed.
Camille staggered, clutching her cheek. “You just hit me?”
“You came at me first.” Elena said, steady. “That’s on you.”
She took a step back, creating space. “This is clearly getting blown out of proportion. I’m done here.”
She turned and walked.
Two steps.
Two men in black suits moved in, blocking her path like they’d been waiting for the cue.
Elena stopped, her expression tightening slightly as she turned back.
Landon was already approaching, slow, unhurried, one hand in his pocket.
“Elena,” he said, voice calm. “Ms. Sterling. Alexander Kingsley’s wife.”
So he’d done his homework.
Not just an actor, then. Not even close.
The realization settled quickly, but it didn’t shake her.
“What exactly is this about?” she asked, glancing at the men blocking her.
Landon extended his hand.
“Your phone,” he said simply.

both Elena and Alexander are stupid, they already knew and agreed to be open, honest and trust each other, but instead they repeated the same mistakes which made them suspicious of each other....
