Chapter 300 The Darkened House
Even then, she couldn’t hide the revulsion and ice in her gaze.
Nathan’s jaw hardened.

His hand, planted beside her head, slowly curled into a fist. His voice was rough when he spoke. “Did you and Alexander have a fight?”
Elena’s brow furrowed. “Have you been watching me?”
It was a fair guess–and it hit the mark.
Nathan brushed off her irritation. Inside, a quiet thrill bubbled up, one he hardly recognized himself.
He’d known it.
All that talk before about her not loving him anymore–just empty noise.
He knew her too well.
She’d always been tender–hearted. She’d cared for him so deeply back in the day. There was no way feelings had just vanished.
“Was it because of me?”
Nathan’s tone softened slightly. He reached to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

“You still feel something for me. Why say all those things out of spite before? I almost ended up hurting
you.”
Elena stared at this man who looked perfectly normal but sounded completely unhinged–like he’d lost touch with reality.
“Have you lost your mind?
“Who told you Alexander and I fought over you?”
She couldn’t help it–a dry laugh escaped her.
“Does anyone even love someone like you? Well, except Camille. You two really are perfect for each other.”
As she spoke, Nathan’s expression darkened.
After a pause, he let out a low chuckle. “Don’t bother trying to piss me off or play games. I’m willing to let go of the foolish stunts you pulled before. Once the Hawthorne family and the Hart family are both under my control, we can start over.”
The more he said, the more stunned Elena grew.
So… Nathan getting back with Camille was just a move to take over the Hart family…
For a second, she wasn’t sure what was more chilling–Nathan’s cold–blooded ambition, or Camille’s blind

devotion.
“You’re sick,” Elena stated flatly.
“My coworker’s here with me. If I’m gone much longer, she’ll call the cops.”
Just as she expected.

Nathan had swallowed his pride to claw his way back–first into the Hart family, then the Hawthornes. He didn’t dare push her now and risk wrecking everything.
He pulled his hand back and let her step away.
“Think it over. Everything I’ve lost is coming back to me sooner or later. The Hawthorne name. And you. So don’t test my patience.”
His words slithered around her like a snake, leaving a sick feeling in her
gut.
Elena didn’t even bother replying. She turned and hurried down the hall.
Hannah was just about to go look for her.
When she spotted Elena returning, she sighed in relief. “I was two seconds from coming to find you. You look pale–everything okay?”
“I’m fine,” Elena said, forcing a light smile so Hannah wouldn’t worry.
About ten feet away, Camille had been watching the whole exchange. She’d caught pieces of their conversation, too. Her eyes drifted to the empty seat beside her.
Twenty minutes ago, Nathan had excused himself to the restroom. He still wasn’t back…
Just as the thought crossed her mind, Nathan reappeared.
“What took so long?” The worry in Camille’s chest eased. She looped her arm through his and leaned in,
voice sweet.
“Got stuck on a phone call,” Nathan replied.
Camille smiled.
But it didn’t last. As she leaned closer, she caught a faint scent on his suit jacket.
Elena’s perfume.
He’d been with her.
That woman–married and still trying to steal her husband.
*********
After the event wrapped up, the driver took Elena and Hannah back. Elena rested her head against the window, replaying Nathan’s words.

He knew she and Alexander had fought… and assumed it was because of him.

Was Nathan keeping tabs on their lives, or was someone feeding him lies? Carol’s face flashed in her mind.
Was it her?
Did she not want Elena with Alexander, so she’d stirred up Nathan on purpose?
Then she remembered what Alexander had told her–that his father’s death might be tied to Simon. A fresh chill ran down her spine.
If that was true… what would happen to Sophia?
Why would Carol want Sophia working at Velmora Media…
Her thoughts were spiraling when her phone buzzed, pulling her back.
Seeing the caller ID, she sat up a little. “Hey, what’s up?”
Alexander’s voice was warm on the other end. “You home yet?”
“Not yet. Maybe ten minutes out. You? Is your meeting over?”
It would still be afternoon where he was.
“Just wrapped up. All right, call me when you’re home?”
“Will do.”
She hung up and shook her head softly. No use getting tangled in all these messy thoughts. Sophia was Simon and Carol’s daughter–whatever was going on, they probably wouldn’t hurt her.
Ten minutes later, the car rolled into the neighborhood.
But the house, usually lit up warmly by the porch and windows, was completely dark that night.
Even the car stopped just at the curb out front.
“Mrs. Kingsley,” the driver turned and said gently, “you’ll have to walk in from here.”
Elena had a feeling she knew what was coming. A small smile touched her lips. “What are you all up to?”
The driver offered a humble grin. “You’ll see once you’re inside.”
She didn’t press further. Pushing the car door open, she stepped out onto the pavement and made her way toward the iron gate at the front walk.
