Chapter 311 The Failed Performance

“I’ll take you to meet your grandfather.”

r years

Riona shot a look at Camille’s smug, self-satisfied face and felt a wave of disgust. After all her navigating the business world, she knew exactly the kind of person Camille was–and it was clear Richard had no idea she was coming today.

So Camille thought she could use the Sterling family to go after Elena? Riona was determined to cut off th escape route. There was no way she’d let Camille keep one foot in the Hart family while leeching off the Sterlings’ resources.

The whole ride over, Camille was busy rehearsing how to tell Richard she was returning to the Sterlings fo good.

Eventually, the car pulled up in front of an elegant gated estate. Camille followed Riona out and inside, immediately struck by the grandeur of the place. Compared to this, the Hart family home didn’t even com close.

“Mind your manners,” Riona said coolly.

Camille nodded and trailed behind her, eyes lowered.

Riona held back an eye roll. So tacky.

But then, Camille’s only real purpose was to keep Elena out of the family. What she was like personally didn’t matter much.

Riona spoke briefly to a staff member by the door.

“Please wait here a moment, Ms. Riona Sterling,” the woman said before hurrying upstairs.

In less than two minutes, she returned. “Mr. Sterling will see you now.

Riona led Camille up to the study and gave a light knock.

A weathered voice answered from within. “Come in.”

They stepped inside.

Alaric set down his pen. His sharp gaze swept over Camille, then Riona, carrying a quiet but unmistakable weight.

Camille instinctively lowered her head further.

“Dad, this is the girl I mentioned-my brother’s real daughter. Elena knew Camille was his child and deliberately kept it from us. Someone that scheming has no place in the Sterling family.

Riona moved closer to Alaric as she spoke, then glanced meaningfully at Camille

Taking the cue, Camille stepped forward obediently. Grandfather, I’m Camille.”

“You’re Malcolin’s daughter?”

Chapter 311 The Failed Performance

“Yes. My parents found me when I was eighteen… But they were worried I wouldn’t adjust so they les stay with the Harts. Grandfather, before Dad passed, he talked about you often. If he knew I could com back to the family, he’d be at peace.”

Tears welled in her eyes as she spoke.

Riona dabbed at her own eyes for effect. “She’s a good girl, Dad. It means so much that she’s home. Ma would have been happy, too.”

The two of them stood there sniffling softly.

But Alaric, standing behind his large oak desk, showed no reaction at all.

After a moment, Camille realized he was still watching her-closely. A ripple of nerves went through her She blinked her damp eyes. “Grandfather…?”

“You said your father spoke of me before he died.”

“Yes…”

“What did he tell you?”

Camille’s stomach dropped. She’d made the whole thing up-how was she supposed to know?

“He… he said he only left because he was too proud. That he’d regretted it for years. He always wanted to come back… but couldn’t bring himself to admit it.”

The study fell into heavy silence.

Riona nearly let out a frustrated laugh. She really is an idiot. No wonder Elena outplays her at every turn.

Alaric’s expression remained unreadable. He shifted his gaze to Riona, and in that one look, she knew he wasn’t pleased.

Camille was still confused. Wasn’t he supposed to be moved? Overjoyed to meet his long-lost granddaughter? Why was he so cold?

Before she could wonder further, the study door opened.

A woman walked in wearing a simple black dress with delicate gold embroidery. She carried a tray with a bowl of freshly cut fruit, and her lips held a faint, knowing smile as she looked at Camille.

And in that moment, Camille understood exactly why things had gone so wrong.
