Chapter 322 A Doctor’s Plea
“Why not me… Gideon, am I really that worthless?”
Isaac stabbed a finger toward his own chest, his voice rising with emotion. “I just never caught a break- never got the chances I deserved. But you were always there, blocking every single one. Everyone only ever saw you. No one ever noticed me. I kept thinking… if you’d just slip up once, then maybe they’d finally see what I could do…”
Gideon’s face shifted from shock to disbelief, then finally settled into a mix of disappointment and quiet anger.
Watching his reaction, Isaac let out a bitter laugh.
“Too bad my luck never turned. I was this close…”
As he laughed, tears began to spill from his reddened eyes.
Declan had already called the police.
Two officers arrived and took Isaac away. Elena stayed with Gideon in the visitation room. He didn’t speak. Even with Isaac’s confession hanging in the air, there wasn’t a trace of satisfaction on his face.
After the police finished questioning Isaac, it became clear that Gideon and Pinecrest Medical Center were the real victims in the situation. They had him sign some release forms and let him go.
Gideon’s parents lived out of the city, and he spent most of his time at the lab anyway. Elena and Declan drove him back there.
blankly
He stood motionless at the lab entrance, staring blankly ahead.
Seeing how lost he looked, Elena reached into his pocket for the keys and unlocked the door to the lab’s attached apartment.
It was a modest space-not large, but tidy and fully equipped exactly what she’d expect from a medical researcher.
Once inside, Gideon sank onto the sofa in a daze. He pulled out a cigarette, moved to fight it, then caught sight of Elena across from him and slowly put

away.
Still, he said nothing.
Elena gave him time to collect himself. Instead of leaving, she glanced around the living room.
It was her first time in Gideon’s place.
Inside a glass cabinet were awards and certificates he’d collected over the years, along with a few framed photos: one
with Julian and his wife, another of her and Gideon taken during New Year’s-link when Richard and Catherine were with Camille, and she’d felt out of place, Gideon sensing her grease in the Hart family, had called and taken her to Julian’s instead.
Beside those was a graduation photo of Gideon and Isaar, both in caps and gowns, stiling brightly at the

Elena sighed quietly.
Two hours passed.
Gideon still seemed withdrawn, unwilling to talk. Elena checked the time, then finally took a seat across from him.
“I know you’re hurting right now,” she said steadily. “But I can’t give you much longer to sit in this. You’re not the only victim here. You may be cleared, but a lot of people got caught up in this mess because of what happened between you and Isaac.”
She understood how awful he felt.
But being an adult meant the world didn’t stop just because you were in pain.
He had to pull himself together and start fixing things.
“Those children got sick because of the drug you helped develop. Right now, the most important thing is to work on a treatment plan for them-and fast. The lab’s reputation is in ruins. If this isn’t handled right. your career is over. And those kids’ lives might be too. You’re a doctor, Gideon. You have to act like one.”
Elena kept her tone firm but not unkind.
Gideon gave a hollow laugh. “After everything that’s happened… you really think they’ll ever trust me again?”
Those children were suffering.
Their parents were probably out of their minds with worry and anger. Why would they give him another chance? Even with Nathan forcing Isaac’s hand, no one would listen. No one would believe it.
“Then you’re going to have to work to earn that trust back,” Elena replied, holding his gaze.
Gideon pressed his lips together. In his mind, he saw the smafbodies lying in hospital beds, fra and suffering, and his chest tightened.
“I get it,” he murmured.
”
“There’s one more thing,” Elena went on, drawing a steadying breath. Her fingers curled gently, nails pressing into her palms. “It’s about Alexander.”
Gideon looked up, startled.
“I know you’ve done research on mood disorders. Alexander has severe bipolar disorder. His family doctor told me the current medications aren’t controlling his symptoms anymore. I’m asking if you can look to developing something tailored to his condition.”
That was partly why she’d come to see him so urgently.
Alexander had refused hypnotherapy outright.
