Chapter 324 The Breaking Point
“I want to be with you”
Finished
Even though Evelyn and Walter kept her company at Kingsley Manor, and through she had Sophia and Hannah at work, none of it gave Elena the same peace and comfort she felt with Alexander.
More than that, she was genuinely worried about him. She hated the thought of him enduring those episodes alone-the anxiety, the memories, everything he tried to shut away.
She kept imagining him as a little boy, dreaming of his father dying right in front of him. How did anyone get through something like that?
Elena had her own share of nightmares, and her adoptive parents had passed peacefully in their sleep. She couldn’t even begin to grasp how Alexander had carried that weight all these years.
“It’s okay,” he said softly. “I’ll come see you in a few days. Just… work’s been heavy lately.”
She knew he wasn’t busy.
He was hiding-from her, and maybe from himself-because he was scared of letting his darkness touch
her.
She didn’t push. Instead, she simply replied, “Okay.”
“I’ll hang up now. Listen to Sullivan, alright? I’m going to call him.”
Elena’s tone was firm, almost protective.
Alexander let out a quiet laugh, and the sound seemed to travel right through the phone into her chest. “Alright, I’ll behave.”
“Bye, sweetheart.”
“Bye.”
She ended the call and held the phone tightly against her.
Even though they’d just spoken, she already missed him.

Alexander stayed still, phone in hand, the screen still lit with Elena’s contact. His laptop glowed in the dim room, casting a cool, pale light over everything. His eyes were fixed on the screen-on the anonymous email he’d opened earlier.
There was a photo attached.
Elena stood outside Gideon’s apartment, leaning into his shoulder as his hand rested lightly on her waist.

Gideon had been released from custody already.
* Finished
How many times had Alexander told her not to get involved? She’d just settled into Kingsley Manor, and already she was running to Gideon’s side.
And there she was, standing so close to him.
Maybe, in her heart, Gideon’s safety really did matter more than his own.
Enough to overlook the baby she was carrying. Enough to ignore every warning he’d given.
Or maybe she didn’t trust him-didn’t believe he’d help get Gideon out.
Whatever the reason, Alexander felt something heavy and shadowed wrap around his heart.
Just then, Sullivan passed by the room.
“Bang.”
He flinched, then pushed the door open.
The laptop lay on the floor, screen shattered, motherboard separated from the display.
Alexander stood in the dimness, his expression unreadable, a chill radiating from him.

Monday morning, Elena logged into the company system.
Alexander’s status showed offline-had been for a while.
She typed a quick message to Ryan. “Is Alexander not in today?”
Ryan was online. “No, Mr. Kingsley took the week off. Didn’t he tell you?”
Almost immediately, he seemed to regret how that sounded
Before she could reply, he sent a humble bowing emoji-an apology without words.
“It’s fine. I’ll call him.”
She’d actually tried that morning.
No answer.
She’d called Sullivan, too. He said Alexander had checked himself out of the hospital last night.
Elena assumed he’d gone straight to the office, unable to stay away from work.
But he wasn’t there either
She tried his number again.

Silence
By afternoon, there was still nothing
It was as if Alexander had simply vanished.
Frustrated, Elena dropped her phone onto the desk.
Just then, Hannah stepped in, her expression tense.
“Elena-something’s happening at Pinecrest Medical Center. We should go
She handed Elena her phone,
A local news outlet was live-streaming from the entrance of Pinecrest Medical Center
A crowd had gathered-families, their faces drawn with anger and grief, shouting toward the hospital doors.
And in front of them, stood a thin, weary-looking Gideon.
“What’s he doing?” Elena asked, a sinking feeling in her stomach.
“He’s trying to explain the malpractice incident, Hannah say quietly. “He and the Morgans are piesiging to cover all treatment for the affected kids until they recover… but it’s not going well. Even though the police cleared him, Isaac worked in his lab. Gideon’s still held responsible.”
Vicarious liability.
Even if he didn’t do it, the blame landed at his feet.
Let’s go, Elena said, already reaching for her bag
Gideon couldn’t afford another disaster
She still needed his help for Alexander’s

both Elena and Alexander are stupid, they already knew and agreed to be open, honest and trust each other, but instead they repeated the same mistakes which made them suspicious of each other....
