Chapter 337 A Warning for Fiona

But this time was di#erer

For Elena’s sake, Alexander had gone so far as to set aside even the history between their fathers.

“I was only saying it casually,” Fiona said, tears trembling in her eyes. “Ari, don’t you think what you said was too much?”

Her voice faltered, growing softer and more wounded.

Joy

“Have you ever thought about how devastated my father would be if he heard you say something like that?”

Alexander’s expression did not change.

“I think your father would be far more disappointed to see the daughter he was once proud of saying the things you just said.”

He had never been especially patient with women he did not love, and when his temper ran thin, his words turned sharp enough to cut.

Yes, Fiona had introduced Dr. Newton to him.

But he had already repaid that favor, and more than repaid it.

What he would never tolerate was anyone using that as an excuse to insinuate things about his wife or his bodyguard.

Fiona’s

eyes

reddened at once.

In the end, she could not hold herself together. She turned and ran out in tears, but Alexander remained completely unmoved, as though her departure had not altered the air in the room in the slightest.

A moment later, the phone beside him lit up.

It was a video call from Sophia.

He answered.

“Hey, Ari. I missed your call earlier because I was in the shower.”

Sophia was sitting cross-legged on the sofa, clearly in the middle of watching a drama, her attention split between the screen and the call.

Alexander reached over, picked up the two luxury boxes from the table, and lifted them lazily into view.

Sophia’s eyes lit up immediately.

“Wait, stop moving them around. Let me see properly.”

Her voice shot up with excitement.

A faint simple finally touched Alexander’s lips as he angled the camera lower, letting her get a clear look at the jewelry resting acrossdjis lap.

“Oh my God, I love them. Thank you, Ari. Seriously, you always know exretly what I like. They’re so pink and pretty and adorable”

Her whole face lit up with delight.

Having a brother really was wonderful.

There always seemed to be gifts waiting for her.

“I didn’t pick them out,” Alexander said.

Sophia blinked. “What?”

“Declan did.”

“Then I’m calling Declan right now,” she said with a grin. “But thank you too, Ari.”

She was just about to end the call when Alexander spoke again, his tone casual enough to sound offhand.

“You’re off work pretty early. I thought you’d all been busy lately.”

Sophia paused, momentarily confused.

“Busy? Not really. Things have actually been pretty quiet these last few days. Elena even took time off to go out with her best friend. If I’d known, I would’ve gone too.”

So the company was not busy.

Which meant Elena had lied to him.

Then who was she with?

Was she with Gideon, or was she really with Chloe?

Alexander said nothing more and ended the call,

Sophia, meanwhile, thought nothing of it and immediately dialed Declan.

He was downstairs smoking.

The moment he saw her name flash across the screen, he instinctively crushed out the cigarette before answering the video call.

“Miss Sophia.”

He stood so straight he looked almost formal.

Sophia wrinkled her nose at him. “Why are you being so serious? Do I look that scary to you?”

Where she could not see the tips of Declan’s ears had already turned faintly red.

“Ari showed me the things you picked out for me.” Sophia said brightly. “Declan, your taste is getung better and better. You got every single one exactly right.”

She praised him without reservation, her eyes shining.

Declan’s throat moved once.

He glanced at the screen, caught the sparkle in her eyes, and then looked away almost immediately, as though he could not bear to keep looking for too long.

“I’m glad you like them, Miss Sophia.”

“Of course I like them. I’m going to wear them when I have dinner with Edmund. I’ll definitely be the center of attention.”

She was practically glowing with excitement.

Something in Declan’s eyes dimmed.

Sophia noticed the silence at once.

“Why did you stop talking? When are you coming back? When you do, I’ll take you out for-

“Miss Sophia, it’s late.”

He cut her off before she could finish, his tone turning quiet and restrained.

“You should get some rest.”

The rest of her words caught in her throat.

She sniffed, clearly displeased.

“Declan, you’re getting bolder and bolder. I’m talking to you and you’re already acting impatient?”

He did not answer.

The silence made her lose interest.

“Fine. Then I’m not talking to you anymore. I’m going to bed. Bye.”

She hung up.

Declan lowered the phone as though nothing had happened, finished the cigarette in silence, and then went back upstairs.

By the time he returned to the room, Fiona was gone.

Only Alexander remained.

“Sophia called you?”

There was no need to think hard about it. Alexander could easily imagine Sophia complaining that Declan had cut her off and asking him to scold him on her behalf.

Declan nodded. “Yes.”

After a brief pause, he added, “Miss Sophia is still young.”

“I know.”

Alexander looked at him for a moment before speaking again.

“Simon is considering a marriage arrangement between Sophia and Edmund Grayson.”

Declan’s hand paused for no more than two seconds as he poured water, and then he continued as though nothing had happened, carrying the glass over and handing it to Alexander without offering a single

comment.

Alexander had always known that Declan cared about Sophia.

But Sophia liked Edmund.

Edmund was lively, charming, and always knew how to keep her entertained. Standing next to someone like that, Declan’s quiet restraint and sparse words only made him seem duller by comparison.

When Declan gave no reaction, Alexander did not continue.

Feelings were not something that could be forced simply because another person saw through them. If Declan would not take a step forward himself, then even as Sophia’s brother, Alexander had no right to interfere too much.

Besides, any relationship that needed someone else to push it into existence was unlikely to last.
