Sham Marriage Quit. Real Heiress Strikes Back

“I am a psychiatrist, Dr. Newton said honestly, “and Alexander’s condition is not beyond treatment, but the problem is that he is resisting those memories from the inside. If the patient refuses to cooperate, there is only so much a doctor can do.”
Then he looked at Elena and added in a calmer tone, “You’re his wife. Perhaps if anyone can talk to him properly, it would be you.”
Elena let out a quiet sigh.
It wasn’t as though she had never tried talking to Alexander. She had, more than once, and every time she had hoped she might finally reach something buried deep inside him, but the results had been minimal at best. Now, rubbing lightly at her temples, she could only sit there in silence, not knowing what else she was supposed to do.
Before she could gather her thoughts, the office door was shoved open so roughly that it struck the wall.
Fiona strode in, her expression dark with anger, and the moment she entered, she turned that anger straight on Elena.
“When I was the one staying with him, he was doing fine,” she said sharply. “And the second you arrive, he has an episode. Elena, are you here to stay by his side, or are you here to make things worse for him?”
Her hostility was impossible to miss.
On New Year’s Eve, she had deliberately asked Dr. Newton’s family to invite Alexander over, intending to leave Elena waiting in vain, and even though Alexander had initially agreed, in the end he had still gone back to Elena. Fiona had not been able to swallow that humiliation since.
But Elena had no energy left to argue over something so pointless.
She stood up, nodded politely to Dr. Newton, and said, “Thank you for your time.”
Then she turned to leave.
Being ignored only seemed to make Fiona angrier. She stepped forward and blocked Elena’s way.

“If you really care about him, then you should leave,” she said. “If he doesn’t see you, maybe his emotions won’t swing so violently. Do you really have to let him suffer like this just to satisfy your own possessiveness?”
Her voice grew even colder.
“He’s such a proud man, and yet you insist on staying here to watch him at his weakest, as if seeing that side of him somehow proves how special you are to him. Elena, do you have any idea how selfish that is?”
The words hit Elena like needles driven straight into her heart.
For a second she could not even answer. She only lifted Fiona’s hand from in front of her, pushed past her,
and walked out of the office in a daze.

By the time she returned to Alexander’s room, he was still asleep.
She dragged a chair quietly to the bedside and sat down, then reached out to tuck the blanket more securely around him, her movements careful and light.

In Elena’s heart, Alexander had always been the man who could do anything, the one who stood tall no matter what came, but over the past little while, she had seen too many moments she had never imagined I she would witness, moments when he was vulnerable, exhausted, and frighteningly fragile right in front of
her. He had been trying so hard not to let her worry, forcing himself to endure even when his body and mind were clearly already under strain, and underneath all of that was something she understood more painfully than ever now: he was afraid of hurting her, afraid of hurting the baby, afraid of becoming someone he could no longer control.
Had coming here really been a mistake?
“What are you thinking about?”
His voice came so suddenly that she startled and looked up.
At some point, Alexander had opened his eyes, and now he was watching her with that steady, dark gaze of his.
“You’re awake.”
She blinked quickly, forcing the tears back before they could rise, and smiled as naturally as she could.
“I was thinking about what to cook for you tonight. What do you want to eat?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
In truth, he had very little appetite, and the silence that followed stretched between them until it grew almost heavy.
In the end, he was the one who broke it.
“Does your neck still hurt?”
The moment he asked, whatever composure Elena had been holding onto shattered. Tears welled up so fast that she could taste the salt of them before she even realized she was crying. She touched her neck and tried to smile through it.
“It’s not too bad,” she said softly. “It didn’t hurt as much as the last time Nathan grabbed me.”
Alexander was taller than Nathan, broader, stronger, and yet somehow the bruises around her throat had not hurt as much as they had the other time. Maybe some final thread of reason had still held him back before he could truly lose control.
The pain on her skin was not what hurt most.
What hurt most was somewhere deeper.
“Alexander,” she said, her voice breaking even though she was smiling, “my heart hurts.”

Her fingers tightened around his hand.
“How am I supposed to help you?”

She had come all this way believing that maybe, just by being beside him, she could make things even a little better. But now, with Fiona’s words still echoing in her mind, she could not stop wondering whether her presence had only made everything harder for him, whether being near her forced him to hold himself together in ways that were hurting him more.
Alexander lifted a hand and wiped the tears from beneath her eyes, his rough fingertips passing gently over her lashes and cheeks.
“Go home,” he said at last.
“Tomorrow I’ll have Declan arrange your flight back. I can’t stop worrying while you’re here with me like this, not when you’re pregnant.”
He had already hurt her once.
He had no way of knowing when he might lose control again.
This time it had only left bruises. What about next time?
He could not afford to gamble with her safety or with the life of their child.
In his mind now, none of this was really about himself anymore. Whatever happened to him, the most important thing was Elena and the baby, and for their sake, he would find a way to get better as quickly as he could.
“I will get better,” he said, his voice low and steady. “And I’ll come back soon. I promise. I’m not lying to you, so be good and listen to me.”
Elena did not want to leave.
She held onto his hand even more tightly, torn so badly inside that for a moment she could not speak at all.
Then the vibration of her phone broke the silence.
She wiped her face quickly, pulled it out, and saw Sophia’s name on the screen.
“What is it, Sophia?”
For several seconds, there was no reply at all.
“Hello?” Elena said again, a little more softly this time.
At last, Sophia spoke.
“Sister–in–law…” Her voice was strained in a way Elena had never heard before. “Catherine is dead. Did you know?”
In the end, Elena took the earliest flight back to Northbridge,

She had not wanted to go.
But Walter had said that whatever had happened before, Catherine was still, in the eyes of others, her mother, and if Elena did not show up at all, people would inevitably talk behind her back. He had not said it to pressure her, only because he wanted to protect her from unnecessary gossip, and after thinking it through, Elena understood that.
So she agreed.
With death, old debts seemed to lose some of their weight, and whatever Catherine had done to her in the past, Elena found that she no longer had any desire to revisit it in her mind.
By the time she landed at Northbridge Airport, she had only just stepped off the plane when a message from Alexander came through.

both Elena and Alexander are stupid, they already knew and agreed to be open, honest and trust each other, but instead they repeated the same mistakes which made them suspicious of each other....
