Chapter 38 Stolen Credit
Victor spoke up. “Elena has a good relationship with the Kingsley siblings right now. We can’t burn that bridge.”
Victor’s word carried weight in the family. Victoria might still resent the situation, but she did not argue further.
Even so, the idea of accepting a child born to Elena as a Hawthorne heir was something she would never agree to.
Nathan’s thoughts were elsewhere.
“Alexander’s getting married? I haven’t heard a single rumor about which family’s daughter he’s marrying
Normally, landing a marriage into the Kingsley family would be the ultimate prize in high society. There was no way something like that could happen without whispers spreading.
Victor found it strange as well. But if the Kingsley family wanted to keep something quiet, there was little anyone else could uncover.
On Monday, Elena went back to the office. The draft of Alexander’s interview had been finalized and was ready for publication.
Andy called her into the office.
“Elena, I need to talk to you about something.”
Andy looked uncomfortable, but remembering the directive from above, forced a thin smile.
“Camille went with you to interview Alexander last time, right? She just got back from overseas and needs a strong feature to build her reputation here. Management has agreed that for Alexander’s cover story, the byline should list Camille as the interviewer.”
No wonder she had felt all morning that something was about to go sideways.
Elena’s expression turned cold. “I handled the entire interview, from the research to the questions. Now that it’s ready to publish, you’re replacing my name with Camille’s? How is that fair?”
“You’re already well known in the industry. It’s just one feature. Aren’t you and Camille like sisters? Letting her have this won’t hurt you.”
Seeing Elena’s firm attitude, Andy’s tone sharpened slightly
Before Elena could respond, Andy made the decision. “It’s settled. Don’t be petty. You’ve been with the magazine for years. If you make senior journalist this year, your salary could double. Otherwise…”
Elena bit her lip. Her hand slipped into her pocket. After a moment, her expression softened
“I just feel like this is unfair. I put a lot of work into those interview questions. When you replaced me with Camille at first, I didn’t complain. When she messed it up and you asked me to step in and fix it, I did. I handled everything, and now the credit goes to her. That’s hard to swallow.”

Camille walked over with a mug in hand. She clearly already knew what had happened, yet her face was full of concern. “Elena, you don’t look so good. Did something change with the interview?”
Inside, Camille was thrilled. Let them celebrate too early. They deserved the embarrassment.
Elena’s sharp gaze locked onto Camille.
“You knew, didn’t you? They’re switching the byline to you.”
The words landed, and Hannah instantly understood Elena’s mood. Elena had done all the work, and Camille was swooping in to claim it. Who would be okay with that?
Camille blinked innocently. “Really? I had no idea. Elena, I’ll go talk to Andy. There must be some misunderstanding.”
She was a natural performer. At first glance, she looked completely unaware.
“Stop pretending-”
Hannah started to defend Elena, but Elena stopped her.
“If you like stealing credit that much, go ahead.”
She walked past Camille, returned to her desk, pulled her keyboard closer, and began typing rapidly.
Hannah followed. When she saw the words on the screen, her eyes widened. She started to speak, but Elena gently pulled her down into the chair.
Hannah lowered her voice. “Elena, are you resigning?”
“Yes.”
Elena answered calmly.
“Why would you resign? Camille should be the one leaving. You’re our star journalist. Who does she think she is? She botched her first interview and now she’s stealing yours. No way. Let’s go talk to Andy.”
