Elena cursed inwardly. She itched to smash a liquor bottle over William’s head and see what mess was inside it–why was his brain so mushy, so impossible to reason with?
“What do you want me to do?” she tried, probing, “If you’ll let me, I can call your company. I’ll ask for you to handle this project. My firm will partner with yours next quarter.”
William shook his head. “Worthless. They already fired me. And it’s all your fault. You’re petty, you’re ruthless–you’re not even a tenth as good as her. Alexander must be crazy to want you.”
Elena fell silent.
She was terrified and exasperated, but escape was impossible. She had to play along, buy time.
“You re right. I’m not a tenth as good as Fiona. I’m not half as amazing. Whatever you say. What will it take for you to let me go?”
“Finally, some sense.” William nodded, his gaze twisting into something odd. “You’ve got a little self- awareness. Since you’re being reasonable, I’ll tell you–do you know who Alexander’s with right now?”
What do you mean?” Elena frowned.
“I’m telling you not to expect him to save you. It’ll never happen. Understand?”
“What did you just say? Who is he with…”
Back home, it was 9 PM. Alexander should be at home. They’d planned to video call at this time.
She hadn’t texted or called him today. He must have noticed something was wrong by now. He’d definitely be contacting Lucas, searching for her.
“You want to know?” A flicker of excitement lit William’s eyes.
Elena pressed her lips tight.
“Then I’ll tell y
I you.”
He seemed eager to see her break down. Right in front of her, he picked up his phone and made a call.
Ring… Ring… Ring….
Each jab of the line felt like a punch to her heart.
Elena knew she shouldn’t doubt Alexander. But after reading Fiona’s messages last time, her nerves coiled tight despite herself.
Finally, the call connected.
William clamped a hand over her mouth.

“Fiona, are you awake?” he asked, his voice soft and tender.
From the phone came Fiona’s impatient tone. “Yeah, I’m busy.”
“Is he still asleep?”
Hel
Who is he?
A chill ran down Elena’s spine. She didn’t want to hear the familiar name leave Fiona’s lips.
But her hands were bound. She couldn’t even cover her ears.
“Mhm, Alex’s still feverish. He just fell asleep.” Fiona’s voice was thick with concern.
Alex.
Alexander…
They are together right now. Alexander is lying beside Fiona.
Meanwhile, Iam kidnapped, unsure if I’ll live through the night.
No.
Elena forced herself to calm down.
What if this is a setup? What if Fiona and William are working together to mislead me?
The thought had barely crossed her mind when a low, familiar groan came through the phone–a sound she knew better than anyone. It was Alexander.
“Alex’s awake. I have to go.” Fiona hung up quickly.
William released his hand, his eyes mocking and triumphant. “See? I told you. Without you in the way, Alexander and Fiona would’ve been together ages ago. Married by now. I’ll make you atleal. Divorce Alexander, and I’ll let you live. How’s that?”
The man is utterly insane–a hopeless, obsessed simp
He loves Fiona so much he’d gladly play matchmaker for her and the man she wants.
Elena fought back the tears stinging her eyes.
“A phone call proves nothing,” she said, clinging to hope.
It has to be a misunderstanding.
