Chapter 43 Dinner Plans
Before Camille could fully enjoy the moment, Nathan lowered his voice and reminded her, “Don’t c that out here, someone might hear.”
Camille’s smile stiffened.
The frustration hit hard. Her own husband, and she could not even call him by name in public?
But when she thought about how Nathan had gone out of his way to invite her to dinner tonight, the irritation faded just as quickly.
Tonight, she was going to get pregnant with Nathan’s child.
She had not forgotten what Victoria told her earlier. Charles had made it clear he wanted Elena to ha baby for Nathan, and Nathan, for the sake of the shares, had actually considered it.
Did they think she was just background decoration?
If anyone was having Nathan’s child, it would be her.
Once she was pregnant, there was no way Charles could keep Elena in the Hawthorne family.
Nathan and Camille were seated not far from Elena, maybe thirty feet away, but she could not make o what they were saying. The less trouble the better. She was just about to text Alexander and suggest the move somewhere else when the restaurant door opened again.
Alexander walked in.
The moment he stepped inside, conversations near the entrance faltered. A few diners glanced up instinctively, their eyes lingering. He carried that effortless presence, the kind that drew attention withe trying.
Alexander seemed unaware. He exchanged a few quiet words with the manager, who personally led him over.

Fortunately, Nathan and Camille did not notice.
“Sorry I’m late, traffic was a mess,” Alexander said, undoing his suit jacket as he sat down. He pulled a sma gift box from his pocket and slid it across the table to Elena.
“What’s this?” she asked, then immediately regretted it. The question sounded unnecessarily coy.
“A first–meeting gift,” Alexander said, a hint of amusement flickering in his eyes. “I should’ve given it to you the first time we met, but the situation wasn’t ideal.”
Elena had intended to refuse. Then she reconsidered. He is going to be my husband. Why refuse?
She picked up the box and opened it. Inside was a pair of delicate pink diamond earrings shaped like tiny hearts.
Elegant and understated. She fell for them at first glance. The corners of her lips lifted without her noticing.
“Do you like them?” Alexander asked, clearly already knowing the answer.
“Thank you, Mr. Kingsley,” she said.
He arched a brow. “Are we still going with full formalities?”
Elena searched her memory and confirmed they had never met. That left only one possibility.
Alexander’s back was to the entrance. Elena cleared her throat softly and gave him a look. He turned just a Evelyn reached the table.
“What are you doing here?” Alexander asked, a faint crease forming between his brows.
Evelyn’s gaze swept over Elena’s face before she adjusted her dress and took a seat. “Can’t a mother come meet her future daughter–in–law?”
So this is Alexander’s mother.
Elena had not prepared for this, but she kept her composure. She rose slightly and nodded politely. “I nice to meet you.”
Evelyn studied her for a moment. “Have a seat.”
Her elegance carried an unmistakable edge of superiority.
Elena sat down. She had a feeling this future mother–in–law would not be easy. Still, she doubted anyo could be worse than Victoria.
Alexander did not look at Evelyn. Instead, he turned to Elena. “Do you want to move somewhere else?
Elena blinked in surprise. She had not expected him to suggest leaving outright. She glanced at Evelyn whose expression had already darkened.
Her own son, trying to walk out the second she arrived?
