"If you still don't have results by tomorrow, I'll be talking to HR about whether you're fit for this role."
Elena left the office.
Sophia noticed her expression right away and leaned in. "What happened?"
"It's nothing." Elena forced a small smile.
Sophia nodded, still watching her. "Did she give you a hard time? Want me to tell Alexander to fire her?"
"No."
Elena shut that down immediately. The last thing she needed was Sophia actually escalating things.
At the end of the day, even though Lydia clearly wanted her out, she had not technically abused her authority yet.
"I'll go back to the hospital tomorrow and work late tonight to finish the draft."
Elena reassured her. "I've got this. Don't worry."
Velmora Media got off work at six. A little after, people started leaving one by one. Elena packed up her things when Nathan called.
After the blowup at the Hawthorne house last time, she had taken him off her blocked list, curious to see what he would do next.
She answered.
"I thought you still wouldn't pick up." Nathan's voice sounded almost pitiful.
"What is it?" Elena asked, suppressing her disgust.
"Did you forget? Today matters. For the past five years, we've spent this day together."
Elena tightened her grip on the phone, her knuckles paling.
Of course she remembered. It was Nathan's birthday. Every year, she had cooked dinner herself, set up a candlelit evening, and carefully prepared a gift.
"What are you getting at?" She slid into her car.
"I booked a room at Seaview Grand Hotel tonight. Give me a chance to make things right, okay?"
Nathan sounded sincere, like he truly regretted everything.
Elena leaned back in her seat, scrolling through Instagram as she half listened to him apologizing. Right then, she saw a new post from Camille.
"Celebrating tonight, Seaview Grand Hotel."
In the photo, Camille was lounging in a hot spring pool in a red bikini, her skin glowing.
If Elena had to guess, that post was set so only she could see it. Even now, Camille was still trying to make sure she noticed.
Elena had not planned to go, but now she was intrigued.
"Sure. Half an hour. See you there?"
He reached for her hand, just like he always had, gentle but firm, with a hint of possession.
This time, Elena felt nothing.
"Your hand, what happened?"
Nathan noticed the bandage wrapped around her other hand.
"I got hurt at work."
"Be more careful. I'd hate to see you hurt, okay?"
He squeezed her fingers affectionately.
Elena almost felt sick. He did not even ask how bad it was or what treatment she needed. A single line of concern, and he thought that was enough.
Nathan didn't catch the shift in her expression. He led her inside. Just as they stepped into the lobby, a group of people walked out.
They were from Swiftline.
And right at the center of them was Camille.
She wore a deep cut, backless red dress that highlighted her figure, bold and eye catching.
A complete contrast to Elena.
