Sham Marriage Quit Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 66

He pulled Elena aside.

"Listen, I was wrong earlier. I know you were just doing your job. But Camille is still your sister. She's emotionally unstable right now. Just say sorry to her, okay?"

Elena lifted her eyes to him. "Nathan, do you hear yourself?"

He avoided her gaze. "I know you're still upset about before. I promised I wouldn't blur lines with her again. But this is about someone's life. It's just an apology. That's not so hard, is it?"

Catherine's voice cut in. "How can you be this cold?"

Elena looked at all of them, her fingers icy.

She had simply done her job. Now she was being called heartless. "I'm not apologizing."

She looked straight at Camille.

"If you publish something like that, you should already know how to deal with the fallout. After all these years as a reporter, you can't handle basic pressure?"

Camille started crying again.

"Elena, don't be so cruel." Nathan's tone sharpened.

"I've always been this cold, haven't I? Maybe you should ask yourself whether you care more about Camille than your own wife. Or is she the one who feels like your wife?"

Nathan stiffened. "What are you even saying? I married you. Of course you're my wife."

"Then why are you taking her side?"

Elena pressed him deliberately. Nathan had no answer.

Richard finally stepped in. "Enough. Camille was wrong. Elena was doing her job. Let's not drag this out. Elena, don't be upset. How's work at Velmora Media? Why did you suddenly decide to work there? Did Mr. Kingsley arrange it?"

"It wasn't arranged. I interviewed and got in on my own. I have things to do. I'm leaving."

She turned and walked away without looking at Nathan.

He started to follow, but Camille let out a weak sound from inside. Catherine called, "Nathan, ask her where she's uncomfortable."

Nathan stopped and went back inside. Elena did not expect him to come after her.

Richard followed her into the hallway.

"Elena, try to understand Camille. Your mom and I spoiled her growing up. Don't take it to heart."

Inside her apartment, she sat on the couch and opened WhatsApp. Nathan had sent a message apologizing for what he had said earlier.

She did not reply.

In the work group chat, Lydia reminded everyone about tomorrow's gathering.

The chat was buzzing. Everyone was excited, debating what to wear since Alexander would be there and wondering if they should dress more formally.

Luna sent a message, "Relax, tomorrow's spotlight isn't on us. They're recognizing editorial department. That means Lydia is the star. As long as she looks amazing, we're good."

Someone chimed in, "Luna's right. Lydia must be close to Mr. Kingsley, right? Why else would he personally come to our department?"

Another added, "Of course. Lydia was his underclassman. They probably grab dinner all the time."

Elena scrolled through quietly. Under Lydia's message that attendance was mandatory, she replied, "Got it."

She exited the chat and was about to put her phone down when she remembered she had added the landlord.

He still had not replied to her message.
