"You... you have no respect for your elders! Fine!"
Conrad was certain the scalding liquid was going to leave blisters. Pale and furious, he glared at Remington, but unable to bear the searing pain any longer, he abandoned the argument and turned back to Lizetta.
"Liz, I'm badly burned. Tell them to move out of the way so I can get inside and run some cold water over this immediately."
Lizetta backed up another fifteen feet, covering her nose and mouth with her hand.
At Conrad's demand, she shook her head, not bothering to lower her hand as her muffled voice rang out.
"That's not convenient. Sorry."
Conrad gritted his teeth. "You're entirely too heartless, Liz. If your mother's spirit saw how you're treating your own flesh and blood, she would be devastated."
Throwing out that final guilt trip, Conrad could no longer withstand the burning agony. He spun around and sprinted toward his car.
The vehicle sped off moments later.
Lizetta watched coldly as the car disappeared down the road, then smiled politely at the two security guards.
"I'm sorry for the mess. Please clean this up."
The moment she spoke, Remington glanced at Ray, who had followed him out of the car.
Ray immediately understood and stepped up to the head of the security detail.
"Sorry for the trouble, guys. The smell is pretty intense, and we just added to your workload."
He pulled out a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills and handed them over. "Get yourselves a nice dinner on us."
The captain didn't dare accept the money and frantically waved his hands.
"No, no, seriously, it's fine. It's our job."
The Madden family always treated them exceptionally well, offering the highest salaries in Tranquil Meadows.
The workload was light, too. There were only a few family members, and all of them were easygoing.
They couldn't possibly accept extra money for something so trivial.
Ray chuckled and insisted. "My boss dumped that on purpose. I'd feel terrible not leaving a tip. Otherwise, how about I take you guys out for a drink when your shift ends?"
He negotiated effortlessly.
Jerome smirked faintly and turned back to the security captain.
"Since Mr. Dashiell is offering, go ahead and take it. Just make sure to keep a close eye on the perimeter tonight. We absolutely cannot let certain people sneak in."
With Jerome's permission, the captain finally accepted the bills from Ray.
But internally, he was incredibly confused. What exactly did Jerome mean?
Were they supposed to take the money and let Remington slip by?
Or were they supposed to take his money and keep their eyes peeled to stop him from climbing the walls?
The stench in the courtyard was genuinely revolting. That stew had clearly been a special recipe meant just for Conrad.
God only knew what extra ingredients had been added to make it that putrid.
"The smell is too much. Let's head inside," Jerome said to Lizetta, motioning toward the door.
Lizetta nodded and turned to Remington. Just as she was about to tell him to head home, the man pointed down at his own clothes.

Does evil really triumph always above the good in this novel ? How comes Stella's evilness has no end? Does the author believes that by giving justice and importance to bad people like Stella will make this novel interesring? I am starting to lose my patience and ask when will the writer finally will realize that the protagonist is Lizetta and not Stella....
