Nathan didn't say everything out loud, but Remington knew exactly what he was thinking.
Remington raised an eyebrow and smirked. "The Dashiell family has already brought enough shame upon itself."
Given everything his mother had done, the Dashiell family's debt to Lizetta and their son could never be erased.
It was a miracle that both mother and child had survived at all.
If Joy grew up and wanted nothing to do with the Dashiells, Remington wouldn't have a single word of complaint as his father.
And Nathan certainly had no right to dictate anything.
Seeing Remington so resolute, Nathan knew further arguments would be useless against his son.
He turned to Fiona. "Mom, aren't you going to say something? You're just going to let them make a mockery of us?"
Fiona was briefly caught off guard as well. This wasn't what she had expected either.
Naturally, she had hoped Remington and Lizetta would quickly remarry and bring Joy back to live in the Dashiell household.
But didn't Remington want the exact same thing?
He definitely wanted it more than anyone.
If Joy was taking the Madden surname, it was clearly because Lizetta simply wasn't ready to remarry yet.
Thinking back to the immense suffering Lizetta endured during their previous marriage, and especially that disastrous, interrupted wedding, Fiona completely understood.
Any woman who had been through that kind of trauma would undoubtedly have severe fears about marriage.
Remington had dug this grave himself. Whatever consequences he was facing now were entirely deserved.
As long as her great-grandson was alive and safely back, nothing else mattered.
Fiona was pragmatic. She looked right at Nathan and said,
"So what if his last name is Madden? Does that change the fact that he has Dashiell blood? Does that stop him from being your grandson? Enough. Whether he takes his mother's name or his father's name, it's all the same."

Does evil really triumph always above the good in this novel ? How comes Stella's evilness has no end? Does the author believes that by giving justice and importance to bad people like Stella will make this novel interesring? I am starting to lose my patience and ask when will the writer finally will realize that the protagonist is Lizetta and not Stella....
