The days blurred into weeks of drinking, of numbness.
Then the police called.
“Mr. Williams, we can’t substantiate Jessica Miller’s involvement. No financial trail, no witnesses who’ll talk.”
“She’s asking to see you.”
Jack sat there for a long moment. Then he got up and went.
In the visiting room, Jessica looked like hell, skin sallow, hair plastered to her face, the past few days written all over her.
Jack watched her through the glass, his eyes absolutely frozen.
“I’m a witness. I heard everything you said. Just because they haven’t found proof yet doesn’t mean they won’t. You’d
better start facing reality.”
She ignored him. Reached out through the glass.
“She’s gone, Jack. It’s over. Let’s start over. Just like before.”
“No.”
Flat. Final.
Her face crumpled. “Why? You love her, don’t you? You love Sarah!”
“I have nothing left, Jack. Only you. Don’t throw me away.”
His voice was cold.
“We ended a long time ago.”
“And you killed my wife. You think we have a future?”
The last hope died in her eyes.
She laughed, hysterical, broken.
“I didn’t kill her! You did! You chose me every time! Every sob story, every tantrum, you picked me!”
“You left your own son for me! You made me believe I was special!”
“But you couldn’t let her go either. You wouldn’t divorce her. You wanted my baby for her to raise! I’d rather kill it
myself!”
