Jack’s brow creased, his tone softening artificially but laced with Impatience. Come on, Sarah. Just for a bit She’ll give it
back once she’s better
What is her health to me?”
Sarah stood up, meeting his gaze with ice in her eyes. “I said no.”
His face hardened, frustration bleeding through. “You’re the one who pushed her. Letting her borrow it to recover is the
least you could do.”
‘Did you actually see me push her?”
The words tore out of her before she could stop them, her voice rising.
Jack flinched, then his expression curdled into irritation. “Look, I’m not gonna hold the stabbing against you, okay? But lay off Jessica. She hasn’t done anything to you. And she’s leaving the country soon anyway.”
He turned toward the master bedroom. “I’m getting the locket. Just think of it as your way of making things right.”
“Jack, don’t you dare!”
Sarah’s eyes went wide. She lunged after him..
At the bedroom door, she saw him lift the gold locket from the jewelry box on the vanity.
“Jack! Put it down!”
Her voice cracked, raw with desperation as she threw herself at him.
“That’s mine! I said no! Are you deaf?”
Jack sidestepped automatically.
Sarah hit the floor hard. Something snapped inside her. She surged up and slapped him across the face.
The crack echoed through the silent room. Jack’s head whipped to the side, a red handprint flaring on his cheek. When
he turned back, his voice had gone cold.
“Enough, Sarah. I’ve been patient, but this is too far.”
He grabbed her wrist, yanked a tie off the coat rack, and bound her hands behind her back.
“Let me go!”
She thrashed, the fabric biting into her skin.
