On the way to the hospital something clawed at Jack’s gut Sarah’s face. Her eyes.

But Jessica curled against him, pale and trembling. “You actually came for me, Jack… I was so scared I’d lose you again.

His heart softened. He patted her arm with one hand and texted a cop friend with the other.

“You heading to the factory?”

“Almost there.”

He pushed the unease down and focused on Jessica.

At the hospital, while she was being checked, his phone rang. His mother.

Jack, where’s Sarah? She left a letter and a divorce…”

“Don’t talk to me about her!”

He cut her off, fury flaring. “She tried to burn Jessica alive! I’m done with her, Mom. You should be too.”

He hung up.

Margaret stared at the phone, then at the letter in her hand. At the divorce decree.

Tears slid down her face.

Sarah was gone. Really gone.

And maybe that was for the best. Jack never deserved her anyway.

Jack’s phone rang again. The cop.

“Mr. Williams? The factory’s fully engulfed. Fire’s out of control. No survivors possible. You’re sure someone was inside?”

The words hit Jack like bullets.

“It wasn’t that bad when I left,” he whispered. “It couldn’t be…”

The place was full of old chemicals. Fire spread fast. Anyone inside wouldn’t have made it. I’m sorry.”
