About ten minutes later, the doorknob clicked.

Thinking it was a nurse doing rounds, Quinn glanced groggily toward the entrance.

To her shock, it was Dante who walked in.

She was wide awake instantly, bolting upright in bed.

It hadn't even been twelve hours since she saw him this morning. What the hell did he want now?

Back when he used to ignore her, she'd see him less in a month than she had in this single day.

Quinn didn't want to wake her son.

Lowering her voice, she demanded, "Why are you here?"

"I had a morning meeting to rush to and didn't get to see my son, so I came to check on him now."

Since that was his excuse, she didn't stop him. "Look all you want," she said coldly. "Then get out."

Lately, every conversation with her felt like walking on broken glass. Dante frowned slightly, then softened his footsteps as he walked over to Leo's bed.

He looked down at the little boy.

The boy had a radiant complexion, soft lips, and long, dark eyelashes that rested on his cheeks like tiny fans.

How had he never noticed how adorable his own son was?

"Did his fever spike again today?"

"Once, but it wasn't too high."

"You've seen he's fine. Are you leaving now?"

Dante didn't answer. Instead, he turned around and walked straight toward her bed.

Quinn tensed up but refused to back down, merely glaring at him coldly.

"Don't listen to the garbage they were spewing in that group chat."

Dante stopped in front of her bed, his tall frame blocking out almost all the dim light in the room.

"They're irrelevant people. I wasn't bothered to begin with."

Dante had come to comfort her, but seeing her utter indifference filled him with a deep sense of frustration.

He held her tightly, greedily breathing in the clean scent of jasmine lingering in her hair.

It was a scent he had been obsessed with since he was sixteen.

Pinning her soft body against his, he used one arm to lock her in place and abruptly tilted her chin up with his other hand. Bending his head, he captured her lips.

It had been so long since he had tasted her soft, yielding mouth.

Once he had her, he had absolutely no intention of letting go. Utterly lost in the moment, he crushed his lips against hers, kissing her hungrily while his heart hammered against his ribs.

It felt just like when they were teenagers, sharing their very first kiss.

But a second later, a sharp pain erupted from the corner of his mouth. He drew in a sharp breath and was forced to release her.

Quinn gasped for air, entirely repulsed by the forced kiss, and glared at him with pure hatred.

Dante's eyes narrowed dangerously. He roughly wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

She had bitten him hard enough to draw blood. A bright smear of crimson stained his thumb.

"Quinn, are you out of your mind!"
