On the staircase, Vivienne Ambrose ran down in tears, brushing right past Mrs. Hayes with Dante Hayes hot on her heels.

Mrs. Hayes was a sharp woman. She quickly pieced together what must have happened and continued her way up.

By the time she reached the second floor, Quinn Yates was just stepping out of the bathroom, her hair freshly dried.

"What just happened?"

Mrs. Hayes did not look pleased, her piercing gaze boring straight into Quinn.

Quinn lied through her teeth without batting an eye. "Nothing at all."

Mrs. Hayes raised an eyebrow, clearly not buying the flimsy excuse. "Then why did Vivienne run down crying? What were you and Dante doing just now?"

Harboring deep suspicions, she took in Quinn's flushed face and swollen lips. Furious, she snapped, "What did we agree on this afternoon, Quinn? You promised me one thing to my face, then immediately turned around and seduced Dante?"

Quinn couldn't believe this. "I didn't provoke your son. Your son barged into my bedroom while I was in the shower."

"And let me emphasize this—I locked the door. Your son used a key to let himself in."

"And then?" Mrs. Hayes stared at her in disbelief.

"And then I asked him to leave so I could dry my hair, but your son suddenly lost his mind, pinned me down, and started mauling me."

Quinn threw her hands up in exasperation. "And lastly, his precious golden girl caught him in the act."

"You..."

Mrs. Hayes looked as if she had just swallowed a fly.

"Are you saying Dante initiated it?"

Quinn couldn't be bothered to entertain her anymore. She picked up her phone and, before dialing, shot the stunned older woman a sideways glance.

"I'm calling someone to change the locks. You don't have a problem with that, do you?"

Mrs. Hayes rubbed her throbbing temples and waved her off dismissively. "Change them, change them..."

Summer nights in Riverton were notorious for sudden thunderstorms, and right now, the wind and rain were howling outside.
