The torrential rain battered down, the heavy drops crackling sharply against the pavement in the dead of night.

Dante Hayes was completely drenched as well.

His wet hair clung messily to his forehead, but the storm did nothing to diminish his imposing, aristocratic aura. He didn't look the least bit pathetic.

"Dante, you promised you would give me an answer."

"Why did you kiss that woman? Are you still hung up on her?"

"I've waited for you all these years. Do you know how many suitors I've turned away? How much longer are you going to keep dragging things out with Quinn Yates?"

He looked at Vivienne Ambrose, whose eyes were filled with accusations and demands. Seeing her trembling violently as she cried, he furrowed his brow.

His deep voice cut through the sound of the rain. "I told you, I have no intention of getting a divorce right now."

"Dante, I know you can't get a divorce right now because you don't want it to affect the IPO. But what about after the company goes public?"

"You stopped loving her a long time ago, didn't you? You're going to marry me, right?"

Vivienne sobbed, her eyes as red as a rabbit's.

"I've waited so long for you, I'm practically becoming an old maid!..."

Dante felt a pang of guilt. After a moment of silence, he said, "Vivienne, there are plenty of outstanding young men in Riverton. I can introduce you to someone much better than me."

"What did you just say?"

Vivienne stared at him in pure disbelief. He actually wanted to push her into the arms of another man.

She had bided her time and schemed for all these years purely to marry him, to secure her place as Mrs. Hayes.

And now, he wanted to push her away completely.

"Dante, is it fair for you to do this to me?"

"The entire elite circle of Riverton knows about our relationship. What respectable heir would ever want to marry me now?"

Vivienne was telling the truth about that.

The entire upper-crust society of Riverton knew she had been chasing Dante for years.

No one wanted to take on a woman who had been deeply entangled with another man for so long. Marrying her would only make them a laughingstock in their social circles.
