Old Mrs. Hayes looked at the gown Quinn Yates was wearing, her eyes curving into a warm smile. "Quinn looks absolutely gorgeous today. You have an excellent eye for dresses."
Seeing the genuine affection on the older woman's face, a heavy wave of guilt washed over Quinn.
She couldn't imagine how heartbroken old Mrs. Hayes would be if she found out about the divorce.
Old Mrs. Hayes studied Quinn closely, noting her slightly hollowed cheeks, and let out a soft sigh. "You definitely haven't been eating well lately."
She shot a glaring, reprimanding look at her grandson. "This is all your fault. You're constantly wrapped up in work and never take proper care of Quinn."
Dante Hayes put on the act of a dutiful grandson. "You're right. I promise I'll take much better care of her from now on."
As he spoke, he fixed his dark, predatory gaze on Quinn.
Avoiding his burning stare, Quinn crouched slightly beside the older woman's chair. "I'm perfectly fine. But you must be exhausted after such a long car ride. Should I arrange a suite for you to rest?"
"Nonsense! Today is the day The Hayes Group goes public. It's an incredibly important day, and I'm thrilled to be here! I'm not going anywhere."
She then turned her attention back to Dante. "Make sure you stay close to Quinn. It's crowded out there, so keep her safe."
Dante nodded solemnly. "Understood."
Moments later, the official listing ceremony commenced. Quinn stood gracefully by Dante's side, listening to the host's enthusiastic opening remarks echo through the venue. She remained perfectly still, a flawless, dignified smile painted on her face.
As thunderous applause erupted from the crowd, Dante—the man at the center of the world's attention—leaned in. He lowered his voice so only she could hear the deep rumble of his words.
"Quinn, come back to me."
"From now on, I will lay the most beautiful things this world has to offer right at your feet."
Quinn maintained her bulletproof smile for the flashing cameras.
Inside, however, a wave of bitter coldness swept over her heart.
In the past, a promise like that from Dante would have moved her to tears.
But she wasn't that naive sixteen-year-old girl anymore.
