Dante leaned back in his chair, his gentle gaze concealing a dark intensity.
"It doesn't hurt to let the doctor look at it. Whether it can be treated is another matter."
Trapped under his predatory glare, Vivienne had nowhere to hide. Reluctantly, she untied the silk scarf around her wrist.
A stretch of distinctly pale skin was exposed, marred by an old, horizontal scar across the center.
Professor Thorne carefully examined the scar line and the surrounding tissue before speaking.
"This is a seven-year-old laceration. The scar tissue is well-established, so it can't be completely erased in a single session."
"However, with a combination of fractional lasers and topical medication over several treatments, we can smooth out the texture and fade the pigmentation. You'd only be able to see a faint trace up close. For daily life, it would be practically invisible."
Dante nodded and turned to Vivienne. "Then you can come to Professor Thorne for treatments from now on."
Feeling reassured by what seemed to be Dante's enduring favor, Vivienne smiled. "I just hope it won't be too much trouble for you."
Shortly after, a nurse entered the room to take Vivienne to the adjacent dressing room for her topical application.
She worried again if the doctor would say anything to Dante in private.
Vivienne dragged her feet, constantly glancing back, until the nurse ushered her into the room.
When she emerged from the dressing room, she saw Dante waiting for her in the hallway, looking entirely normal.
She finally relaxed and walked over with a smile.
"Dante, Professor Thorne's ointment is amazing. It feels so soothing. I really think it's going to work."
Dante simply nodded. "Let's go."
They got into the car. As Vivienne buckled her seatbelt, she smiled and suggested, "Dante, it's getting late. You probably won't get much done if you go back to the office now. Why don't we grab dinner together?"
He had been so busy lately that she only asked tentatively, fully expecting a rejection.
To her surprise, he agreed immediately.
"Alright. I'm taking you somewhere a bit farther away."
With that, he started the engine.
The car sped smoothly out of the city limits.
Assuming he had just found a nice, secluded private restaurant, Vivienne didn't think much of it at first.
It wasn't until the sky grew dark and the car exited the highway, turning onto a narrow backroad, that she realized something was wrong.
"Dante, where exactly are we going?"
"Don't worry, we're almost there," he replied, his voice chillingly low.
She peered out the window. The car had driven deep into a sprawling, mountainous forest.
After driving a while longer, a terrifying realization clicked into place. She gasped. "This is the road to Silverpine Lake!"
