Dante walked away without a single backward glance.
The freezing rain pelted heavily against her face and skin.
Shivering violently, terrified of being abandoned in the middle of nowhere, Vivienne crawled through the mud toward Silas with tears streaming down her face.
She looked up at him, her hands desperately gripping the fabric of his trousers.
"Mr. Vance, please, take me down the mountain with you."
"It's completely deserted up here, there's no one around, and I'm terrified!"
Silverpine Mountain was full of undeveloped wilderness. She'd seen the news reports—wild animals roamed these parts, and there had even been recent attacks on villagers.
She didn't even know if this godforsaken place had cell service. Even if she managed to call the police, who knew how long it would take for them to find her in this storm!
Her only hope was Silas.
After all, Silas was always calculated and level-headed. He knew how to weigh the pros and cons. Surely, even if just for the sake of the Ambrose family and Leon, he wouldn't leave her here to die, would he?
But Silas took a step back, deliberately shaking off her grip.
"Ms. Ambrose, these are Mr. Hayes's orders. Please don't make this difficult for me."
With that, he didn't spare her another glance, turning to jog after Dante.
"No! You can't leave me here!"
Vivienne screamed until her voice went hoarse. She scrambled to her feet, frantically trying to run after the two men.
But the night was pitch black, and the mountain trail was steep and treacherous.
She hadn't made it far before her foot caught violently on an exposed tree root.
Losing her balance entirely, she slammed face-first into the muddy, rocky ground.
"Ah!"
The heavy impact sent her bare knees crashing into sharp, broken branches. The wood tore right into her flesh, and warm blood instantly welled up. A blinding wave of agony washed over her, making her feel as though her skull was splitting from the pain.
The sheer agony sent her body into violent spasms, tears pouring uncontrollably down her cheeks.
The splatter of mud completely ruined her face.
It was the most miserable, wretched moment of her twenty-five years of life, but right now, she couldn't care less about her dignity. Sobbing hysterically, she screamed into the darkness ahead:
"Dante, don't go!"
