Dante despised being lied to more than anything else in the world, which meant his hatred for her now ran so deep that he was willing to abandon her here to rot.
A torrent of endless regret and primal terror consumed Vivienne. Curled up in the freezing mud, she hugged her bleeding knees and sobbed hysterically.
She didn't know how long she sat there crying. The torrential rain battered her wounds until they stung violently. Her legs had gone completely numb long ago, her body stiffening to ice, as if she was losing all physical sensation.
Just as she reached the absolute brink of despair, feeling like she couldn't hang on another second, the screen of her phone, clutched tightly in her palm, lit up faintly.
The signal bar, which had been completely dead, suddenly flickered with one weak bar of service.
Wild joy seized her; it felt like grabbing the final lifeline before drowning.
Her fingers were so numb from the cold she could barely move them. She breathed hot air over them several times before she managed to shakily dial her brother's number.
"Hello?"
The moment she heard Leon's deep voice through the speaker, all the crushing despair she had held back erupted into an agonizing wail.
Trembling and sobbing uncontrollably, she screamed for his help.
"Leon... save me... I'm stranded deep in Silverpine Mountain!"
"They left me here all alone... I don't want to die... please save me!"
On the other end of the line, Leon Ambrose had been hosting a business dinner at a high-end hotel. Hearing his sister's terrified, screaming cries, he vaulted out of his chair.
"Vivienne, don't panic! Send your GPS location to my phone right now. I'm coming!"
Without even bothering to excuse himself to his partners, he grabbed his suit jacket and sprinted out of the room.
"Zack! Mobilize a search and rescue team into Silverpine Mountain immediately!"
"Call the police, and get the helicopters in the air for a full sweep!"
Vivienne was practically Leon's entire world. Once the orders were barked out, he rushed straight to the underground garage, jumped into his car, and sped frantically toward the mountain.
"Please, Vivienne, hold on. You can't die out there," he prayed aloud as he floored the accelerator.
Two hours later, Dante and Silas arrived back in Riverton.
It was late into the night.
