Quinn stared up at the broad, solid expanse of Raymond's back.

His presence was violently intimidating and cold, yet for some unexplainable reason, it made her heart race.

It seemed like no matter the time, no matter the crisis, he was always standing right in front of her, an immovable shield.

Offering her his back with absolute, unflinching loyalty.

Her pulse drummed an erratic rhythm in her chest.

Without turning fully, he tilted his head back slightly, his deep voice rumbling. "Let's go."

Then, a large, powerful hand enveloped hers, pulling her fingers tight against his palm.

His burning heat instantly swallowed the slight chill of her skin, the warmth creeping up her arm like a slow-burning fire.

The amber lighting in the corridor of The Vermillion Pavilion cast long, shifting shadows.

Raymond led her forward step by step, deliberately slowing his long strides so she could walk easily beside him. Their joined hands were bathed in the soft glow of the overhead lights.

Though they hadn't moved far, it felt as if he had carved an impassable gorge between her and Dante.

"No! Quinn, don't go with him!"

Snapping out of his shock, Dante lunged forward to stop her. But his drunken legs betrayed him, and he stumbled heavily, crashing onto the plush carpet of the hallway.

Raymond kept his grip firm on Quinn, guiding her smoothly into the waiting elevator.

Just as the metal doors began to slide shut, he shot one final, icy glare down at Dante.

The floor numbers ticked down rapidly on the display, but Raymond still hadn't let go of her hand.

She could feel the dry heat of his palm against hers.

A moment ago, she hadn't thought much of it, but now, it felt like she was clutching a branding iron. The heat was making her entirely too flustered.

"You can... let go now."

She reminded him softly, her voice barely louder than a whisper.

He acted as if he didn't hear her. His dark eyes remained fixed on the digital screen, his grip unwavering.

*Ding!*

The elevator hit the second basement level. As the doors slid open, Quinn tried to yank her hand back, but Raymond suddenly spun around and pinned her forcefully against the wall.
