The competition had finally concluded, and Quinn had managed to catch two solid hours of sleep, giving her a brief but much-needed respite.
That peace shattered the moment she received a freezing phone call from her father. Any lingering drowsiness vanished, replaced by a chilling weight in her chest.
It was pathetic, really. Her father never reached out unless he needed to reprimand her.
At this hour, Leo and Lydia were taking their afternoon naps. Only Raymond was downstairs.
Seeing the dark cloud hanging over Quinn's face, he asked, "What happened?"
"My father called. He demanded I go back to the Yates Estate."
Raymond's gaze darkened. He murmured, "Eat first."
"I don't have an appetite," Quinn replied. "I'm not hungry."
His dark eyes deepened, and his voice took on a low, authoritative cadence. "Eat first. I'll drive you over when you're done."
Quinn felt like he was acting like a strict butler. Looking at his stern expression, she suspected that if she tried to leave without eating, he would literally drag her back and spank her.
When she walked into the dining room, she saw the spread on the table: zesty lemon shrimp, creamy butternut squash soup, BBQ ribs, and baked salmon. They were all her favorites.
Suddenly, her appetite returned.
Taking a seat, she dug into the food, reasoning with herself that she needed a full stomach to muster the energy for the impending argument.
After the meal, Raymond drove Quinn to the Yates Estate.
The car rolled to a smooth stop.
Raymond turned to look at her. "Want me to go in with you?"
Quinn shook her head. "I'll go in alone."
It was a toxic household. She preferred to face it by herself rather than drag him into the miserable atmosphere.
She stepped out of the car with total composure and walked through the heavy doors of the estate.
The moment she stepped inside, Mr. Yates's suppressed fury hit her like a wall.
"Quinn! You are getting completely out of hand!"
She rolled her eyes. "What did I do? Commit murder? Set something on fire?"
"Don't talk back to me!" Mr. Yates roared.
