Compared to Dante, Quinn's expression was far more composed.
She had come here solely to visit the elderly woman, and seeing that old Mrs. Hayes was in good spirits and health put her entirely at ease.
With a child present, the atmosphere at the table didn't fall into complete silence.
Old Mrs. Hayes absolutely adored Leo. She kept spinning the Lazy Susan, moving all the softest, mildest dishes in Quinn's direction and signaling her to serve them to the boy.
"Eat up, my precious great-grandson! You need to grow big and tall!"
Leo loved his great-grandmother just as much, politely thanking her in his sweet, milky voice, "Thank you, Great-Grandma!"
"You're the best!"
"You have to eat lots too!"
The boy's innocent sweetness warmed everyone's heart, making old Mrs. Hayes beam with absolute delight. "Okay, okay, okay! Great-Grandma will eat too!"
She then turned to Quinn, her eyes full of pity. "Quinn, don't just focus on Leo. Make sure you eat plenty too; you're still way too skinny!"
Terrified that the guilt in her eyes would give her away, Quinn kept her head down and focused on her food. "Mhm, I'm eating!"
Finally, old Mrs. Hayes shifted her gaze to the silent Dante.
"Dante, you've looked completely distracted since you sat down, like you can't even taste the food. Is something on your mind?"
Dante paused for a second before quickly forcing a smile to cover it up.
"Not at all. The food here is better than the most exclusive private restaurants in the city."
"I was just thinking about how I need to come here and crash your dinners more often."
Old Mrs. Hayes nodded, though there was a sudden, profound weight to the way she looked at him.
She used the serving silverware to place a few pieces of chicken on his plate. "If it's good, eat more."
She didn't ask any further questions.
The meal proceeded in relative warmth and harmony.
Shortly after they finished eating, Dante's phone suddenly vibrated.
It was a call from the company.
