After they walked around for a while and ate something, Lilith grew sleepy. She leaned against Dominic’s shoulder and yawned repeatedly. Once they got home, she lay down on the bed and fell asleep almost at once.
Dominic left the room and closed the door behind him.
In the living room, he saw the little girl standing there, watching him timidly.
Dominic took a deep breath, walked over to the sofa, patted the seat beside him, and said, “Come sit.”
The little girl nodded faintly and shuffled closer. Curiosity and fear flickered in her wide eyes.
Dominic smiled gently. “It’s all right. Don’t be scared.”
The warmth of his expression eased her tension, and her anxious heart finally relaxed. Instead of sitting, she stopped in front of
him and spoke softly. “Only you can see me, mister.”
That was why she had followed him home.
Dominic nodded and asked in a kind voice, “What’s your name, and how old are you?”
“My name is Charlotte Moore. I’m five years old… I can’t find my mom and dad. I went to the police officers, but they wouldn’t pay attention to me, wah!” Her voice broke as she spoke. She began to cry, though no tears fell.
Dominic’s fingers trembled. He sniffed hard and lit a cigarette, which finally steadied him a little. He asked, “Do you remember what happened to you? How long has it been like this?”
Charlotte wore a floral dress and a light blue jacket with a bear hood. Her round face and soft hair made her look like a tiny
princess.
She wiped at her eyes as she spoke. “I was sick before. I slept all the time, for a very, very long time. A few days ago, I felt better, but after that, no one could see me anymore.”
Dominic’s expression grew complicated. He understood as soon as he heard her words. The little girl had not recovered. Instead, something else had happened.
“Do you know your parents‘ names?” he asked.
“Are you going to help me find my mom and dad?” Charlotte’s eyes lit up. “My dad’s name is Isaac Moore, and my mom’s name is Grace Quinn!”
Her voice rang with hope.
Dominic did not know how to answer. Even if he took her there, it would only be for a farewell. He fell silent for a moment before asking, “Once you find your parents, what do you want to do the most?”
“I want them to stop fighting, I want them to eat with me.” As she spoke, the light in her eyes dimmed. “Before I got sick, Mom and Dad were always busy, and my aunt took care of me every day. I just wanted them to play with me. But when they came home, they kept fighting, and I was really scared.”
Charlotte’s clear, childlike voice pierced Dominic’s heart.
After a long while, he drew a deep breath and said, “I can help you, Charlotte. But you have to behave. You’ll stay here with me, and you’re not allowed to wander off. If you’re good, I’ll take you to find your mom and dad. All right?”
Joy bloomed across Charlotte’s face. “Really?”
Dominic held out his pinky and smiled. “Of course. Pinky promise, best of friends, this promise never ends
Her bright eyes sparkled, but she pouted. “I can’t make a pinky promise. No one else can touch me.”

“I can,” Dominic said. “Try it if you don’t believe me.”
