At that hour, only a few people were out.
Dominic held Lilith’s hand as they left the community and strolled along the street.
A small food stall stood not far away. The rich aroma drifted over, making the little girl’s mouth water. “Daddy, I want to eat lamb skewers.”
Dominic smiled. “If you eat too many, you’ll turn into a little chubby girl.”
Lilith shook his arm. “Daddy, I just want to eat! I don’t care if I get chubby!”
“All right, all right.” He walked over with her and asked, “How much for one skewer?”
“One dollar each, or four dollars for five,” the middle–aged stall owner replied with a smile, holding out his palm.
“Then five skewers, please,” Dominic said.
“Coming right up.”
Dominic made a quick calculation in his head. He would give Lilith one skewer and eat the other four himself. That seemed
reasonable.
‘It isn’t greed,‘ he assured himself. ‘She simply shouldn’t eat too much of this. It’s for Lily’s health.‘
Satisfied with that logic, he nodded faintly.
Lilith knew nothing of his plan. She clutched his hand with one hand, slipped the other into her pocket, and stared at the lamb skewers sizzling on the grill, her face glowing with anticipation.
Then Dominic’s gaze shifted to the middle of the road, and his expression changed at once.
A tiny figure stood in the center of the street. It was a little girl, perhaps five or six years old.
An SUV sped straight toward her at nearly 60 miles per hour.
Dominic’s heart slammed against his ribs. He was too far away to reach her. All he could do was shout with all his strength, ” Watch out! Get out of the way!”
The little girl turned her head sluggishly and looked at him, her small body frozen in place.
“Run!” Dominic shouted again, his eyes burning as disaster loomed.
She snapped out of it and lurched to the side.
Still, it was too late. The SUV showed no sign of slowing and barreled forward.
In the next second, Dominic went rigid. He stared in disbelief as the SUV passed straight through the little girl. She remained where she was, completely unharmed.
Understanding hit him instantly, yet it made his heart tremble even harder.
“Daddy, what’s wrong?” Lilith asked, tilting her head in confusion.
Several nearby pedestrians had stopped as well, puzzled by Dominic’s sudden shouting.
He drew a deep breath, tightened his grip on Lilith’s hand, and said, “Daddy’s fine.”
“You’re crazy,” someone muttered before turning away.
The stall owner handed over the grilled lamb skewers. Dominic took them and started to leave.

“Hey, you haven’t paid yet,” the man said quickly, still smiling.
Dominic snapped back to himself, hurriedly pulled out his phone to pay, then scooped Lilith into his arms and headed home.
Lilith nibbled on her skewer and said, “Daddy, you’re so strange!”
He wanted to laugh but couldn’t. He glanced back. The tiny figure followed close behind him.
‘She’s even smaller than Lilith…‘ Before, Dominic had managed to remain calm as an observer. This time, his heart would not stop trembling.
After eating two skewers, Lilith announced, “I’m full. You eat the rest, Daddy!”
Dominic took them and forced a smile. “Daddy will eat later.”
In truth, he had no appetite at all.
