Chapter 197
Having the criminal investigation captain’s number saved, whether real or fake, conveyed confidence on its own. That confidence was enough.
The balding man did not dare offend him. More than that, if his behavior here ever came to light, his family would descend into chaos.
Dominic nodded.
The balding man scrambled to his feet and was about to bolt when Dominic spoke in a calm voice. “Pay the money.”
Leona stood at the doorway, staring blankly at the scene.
Reluctantly, the balding man turned back. He pulled another bill from his pocket and handed it to Leona. Only then did he flee in panic.
Leona looked down at the extra hundred dollars in her hand. She hesitated before speaking. “Thank you, handsome. Come in. I …I won’t charge you.”
She knew Dominic had stepped in for her. Beyond that, she had no idea how to repay him.
Dominic entered the room without a word.
Tom followed close behind, his eyes bright with excitement.
Leona walked inside and began to unfasten her skirt.
Dominic was about to stop her when sudden sobbing burst from behind a tightly shut door.
Leona’s face drained of color. “Handsome… you may need to wait a bit.”
She did not pause for anything else. She hurried over and yanked the door open.
It was not really a room. It looked like a bathroom of less than two square meters that someone had hastily converted. A narrow bed filled the entire space. Wire mesh sealed the window. A baby lay on the bed, wrapped in swaddling clothes and crying loudly.
“Don’t cry, Annie. Mommy’s here…”
Leona scooped the baby into her arms and soothed her, glancing at Dominic now and then with an awkward expression.
Dominic kept his gaze calm and said nothing.
“The baby must be hungry,” Leona said uneasily. “I need to make her milk.”
She reached for the formula and thermos beside the bed.
Once the milk was ready and Annie had eaten, the crying finally stopped.
By then, Tom’s eyes had turned red. He kept slapping his own face without restraint.
After Leona coaxed the baby to sleep, half an hour had passed.
Only then did she turn to Dominic and ask softly, “I’m really sorry, handsome… Are you still coming?”
Dominic shook his head and smiled. “I’m here for you.”
“For me?” Leona froze.
“I know your name is Leona,” Dominic said. “I also know your ex–husband is Tom-”
The name alone set her off.

Chapter 197
“Don’t mention that bastard to me!” she screamed as if a switch had been flipped.
Dominic sighed. Tom truly was a complete bastard.
He continued, “I know your story. What I want to ask is this. Back then, why did you choose to give birth to her?”
At the mention of the child, Leona slowly calmed down.
After a moment of thought, she said, “Her name is Annie. She’s a healthy little girl.”
Dominic’s eyes brightened. That was good news. “Then why did you choose to live like this?”
