Dominic’s words left the man speechless.
He was not afraid of Dominic using the law against him. Having already crossed that line, he had never planned to turn back. But Dominic had set the law aside and chosen a weapon instead.
The man clearly had people he cared about as well. He stared at Dominic, trying to judge whether the threat was real.
Dominic spoke evenly. “Of course. That’s the first option. The second option is this. You let her go right now. We will not call the police, and we will let you leave.”
The man hesitated.
What unsettled him was Dominic’s composure. In those deep eyes, there was no anger or violent emotion, only a stillness like a calm lake.
He asked uncertainly, “Y–You’ll really let me go?”
Dominic nodded. “You let her go, and I’ll let you go.”
After a brief struggle, the man finally loosened his grip on Katherine and shuffled toward the door, one step at a time.
Dominic stepped aside as well.
At the doorway, the man lowered his voice. “Katie, I’ll come back.”
With that, he bolted out.
His voice still echoed from outside. “If you dare call the police, I’ll risk everything to make you pay!”
The man chose survival over mutual destruction.
Killing Katherine did not serve his purpose, and Dominic’s words had planted fear deep in his heart.
Only then did Dominic release a long breath. He and Katherine had known each other for years. They were not especially close, but over time they had become almost like family. He could not bear the thought of her being hurt.
“Katherine, are you-” Dominic turned toward her and had just begun to speak when a trembling, soft body suddenly crashed
into his arms.
A moment later, Katherine broke into loud sobs. All the fear and terror she had endured spilled out in that instant, carried by her
crying.
Dominic froze for a second, then relaxed. He did not push her away. Instead, he gently patted her shoulder and said softly, “It’s okay. It’s all okay now.”
Katherine did not answer. She only tightened her arms around his waist. Her tears quickly soaked through his shirt.
At that moment, Isabella pushed the door open and rushed in, her voice tight with anxiety. “Sis, what happened? Just now Dom was about to-”
She stopped short when she saw her husband holding her sister. Her vision swam, and her words died in her throat.
“You…” She pointed at them in disbelief. Strength drained from her body, and she had to grip the doorframe to keep from collapsing.
Katherine cried out and quickly pulled away from Dominic. She wiped her tears and said hurriedly, “It’s not what you think. Let me explain.”
Isabella bit her lip and looked at Dominic. He remained calm and made no move to explain himself.
