Dominic fell silent for a few seconds, then said, “Jessica, you really do owe them an apology. You were completely in the wrong.”
Jessica nodded like a pecking chick, her eyes fixed on him with a pleading look.
Dominic frowned and continued, “Maybe to you it was just a prank, but you saw Isabella’s reaction. If something like that happened to you, how would you feel?”
Jessica froze. When she had done those things, she honestly had not thought that far ahead. She had assumed they would simply leave him.
Dominic went on, “Put another way, if they had stayed completely in the dark, what you did would have been the same as ruining two people’s lives.”
Jessica pressed her lips together. Tears shimmered in her eyes.
Dominic sighed softly. “There’s nothing wrong with being selfish. Everyone is selfish, me included. Take Isabella, for example. If I weren’t selfish, how could I have divorced her?
“Look at it from another angle. If there’s no possessiveness at all, it just means the other person doesn’t matter to you. But selfishness has limits. You can’t hurt your friends, like Autumn. I’m telling you this so you’ll learn from it.”
Tears finally spilled down Jessica’s face as she sobbed, “I don’t care who I lose. I just can’t lose you, Dominic!”
Dominic could not hold back any longer. His voice turned stern. “We’re friends, and we can only be friends.”
Jessica cried harder. Then something seemed to occur to her, and she forced herself to sit up.
Dominic wanted to stop her, but it was already too late. He turned his head away and forced himself not to look, sighing inwardly at his own failings.
Jessica took a glass jar from the bedside table and held it out to Dominic, her hands trembling. “Dominic, you promised me. As long as I folded 1,314 stars, you’d agree to one thing for me.”
When Dominic saw the jar, he froze.
Inside were countless colorful paper stars. The ones at the bottom looked crooked and uneven, but higher up they became
neater and more delicate.
“That jar…‘ Dominic suddenly remembered how, back in university, he had folded 1,314, stars for Isabella. Each one had been folded with a smile. The jar had been filled with love and anticipation for the future.
Emotion stirred in Dominic. Almost without realizing it, he reached out and took the jar.
Jessica spoke carefully. “Dominic, I hope you won’t hate me.”
Dominic looked at the jar full of stars. Emotion churned in his eyes as he asked, “Is that all?”
“Yes.” Jessica raised one finger. “Just that.”
Dominic let out a breath and smiled. “I’ve never hated you.”
Light bloomed in Jessica’s eyes. She stared at Dominic, her heart pounding out of control. In that moment, she finally lost her restraint. She stretched out her pale arms and hugged him tightly, “Dominicl”
Caught off guard, Dominic was taken advantage of by the little menace, and he cried out inwardly, ‘She’s tar too impulsive
This time, though, he did not push her away. On the verge of losing control, he said hoarsely, “Jessica, you need to see a doctar.”
Jessica lifted her head in his arms. Her red lips parted slightly. “Dominic, you’re my best medicine.”
