Chapter 263
The young woman who once bounced around with a constant grin had become frail and sickly, and even Dominic’s voice carried
a trace of worry.
It had to be said that Jessica was strikingly beautiful. At 19, illness only made her seem more delicate and fragile, enough to stir instinctive sympathy.
What stood out even more, however, was the blanket rising over her body, its contours exaggerated and unmistakably dramatic.
Dominic felt a surge of unease. He turned around, intending to step out and call someone to have the little menace sent to a
doctor.
Just as he reached the door, Jessica stirred and slowly woke. She caught sight of a man’s silhouette in the room, jolted in fright, and called out weakly, “Who is it?”
Dominic turned back. “You’re awake?”
When Jessica realized it was him, she froze for a heartbeat, then tried to sit up in excitement. “Dominic… am I dreaming?”
He hurried over to support her. “Dream my ass. You think someone could fake being me?”
“I didn’t mean that…” Jessica’s eyes quivered as she pressed her lips together. “I thought… you didn’t want anything to do with
me anymore.”
“We’re still friends.”
The blanket started to slip, and Dominic quickly pressed it back into place.
His touch made Jessica’s face flush faintly. She said softly, “I’ve been sweating a lot. My clothes are all soaked, so I just…”
“Stop. I get it. No need to explain!” Dominic cut her off aloud.
‘I am already trying hard not to let my thoughts run wild. The more you explain, the harder it gets to keep control,‘ he added inwardly.
“You should sleep. I’m calling an ambulance. A fever that won’t break is serious,” he said.
“No!” Jessica suddenly grabbed his hand. Her voice trembled. “Dominic, don’t go. Stay with me for a while, okay?”
He lowered his head and met her gaze. Longing and fear filled her eyes.
After a brief pause, he sat down beside the bed. “Alright. I’ll stay for a bit. It’s only been a week. How did you end up like this?”
Joy flickered across Jessica’s face. She clutched his hand as if afraid he might leave, even trying to tug it beneath the blanket
Dominic did not allow it. He tightened his grip just enough to stop her.
It was not that he felt nothing for the little menace. A perfectly intact stick of dynamite, however, was best kept far from any spark. Otherwise, it was bound to explode and cause an accident.
Jessica sensed his resistance, and the light in her expression faded.
