Chapter 271
Actually, Dominic had wanted to call Autumn. After what had happened the night before, he could not bring himself to face her. He thought it over and decided to let it go.
The cafeteria was closed on weekends, so Dominic grabbed something to eat outside the building. Afterward, he returned to the office and reviewed documents.
By 4:00 p.m., he drove home. As he passed a construction site, he noticed a large crowd packed tightly together. There was no need to guess. Something had gone wrong.
With nothing urgent to attend to, Dominic pulled over and walked toward the crowd.
A middle–aged woman came out, shaking her head as she sighed. “Oh my, that’s terrible.”
Dominic stopped her. “Ma’am, what happened?”
She clasped her hands and shook her head again. “Young man, don’t go in there. It’s too tragic. A young man was crushed by a steel coil. It’s horrifying.”
Dominic stiffened. “A steel coil?”
Another man stepped out of the crowd and explained, “Yes. The truck didn’t secure it properly. It rolled off, overturned, and crushed someone. Half his body is pinned underneath. He’s still alive for now, but not for much longer.”
Grief weighed heavily on the man’s face. He clearly could not bear to watch any longer.
Even the description made Dominic’s heart pound. Still, he forced his way through the crowd.
A young man of about twenty–six lay on the ground.
A massive steel coil pinned him in place. Everything below his waist was gone. Even without blood everywhere, the sight was brutally shocking.
Some onlookers turned away in sympathy. Others stared with morbid curiosity. Most watched in silence, their faces tight with concern.
At that moment, a woman in her fifties stepped forward and offered a bottle of water. She spoke softly. “Young man, drink some water. The ambulance will be here soon.”
The injured man was still alive, though only barely.
Steel coils did not look large, but each weighed several tons. With half his body destroyed, survival was impossible
In a weak voice, he spoke into the phone. “Mindy, it’s me. I won’t be able to take care of you anymore. You’ll have to look after Callum, too.
