Panic surged through Wendy. She called out, “Adam, come down right now. I’ll buy you candy, all right?”

When the parents saw her, their eyes lit up. They rushed over and said, “Nurse, you must have a way to get him down, right?”

Wendy ignored them. Her gaze stayed locked on Adam, and she kept a smile on her face.

Strictly speaking, she should not have intervened. If the boy fell, the responsibility would fall entirely on her. Still, he was only a child, and Wendy stepped forward without thinking.

Adam kept pulling faces. When he heard the word candy, a flash of greed crossed his chubby face. He stretched out his hand and said, “I want six.”

Wendy agreed at once. “Sure. As long as you come down, I’ll buy you ten.”

Adam’s expression changed instantly. He snapped, “I don’t want ten. I want six.”

In his mind, ten did not seem better than six.

Several onlookers exchanged uneasy looks. The child was already ten years old, yet his understanding seemed seriously lacking.

Wendy spoke quickly. “All right. Six it is.”

Only then did Adam look satisfied. Just as he prepared to climb down, his eyes shifted. He pointed at Wendy and said, “I want you to carry me down.”

Wendy’s heart skipped. “That won’t work.”
