“We’ll talk about it when it’s closer to the New Year.” Jessica frowned. She still wanted to spend the holiday with Dominic.

“Come back early for the New Year and pay a visit to the Jones family.” Her mother kept her voice gentle, but there was an authority in it that left no room for refusal.

“The Jones family? Shaun Jones?” Jessica’s small face tightened at once. Without thinking, she blurted out, “I’m not going.”

“What silly things are you saying, my daughter?” The woman chuckled lightly. “Alright, then. Go have fun. Just don’t ignore my calls again.”

With that, the call ended.

Jessica stared at her phone. The good mood she had carried all day vanished, and her expression darkened.

When Dominic returned home, he found Lilith sitting on a small stool, her head bent low over her homework. Her little face looked solemn, as though she were racing against time.

Dominic burst out laughing. “Summer vacation is almost over, and you’re only doing your homework now?”

Lilith tilted her head to glance at him, then snorted. “Daddy, you’re annoying. I’m ignoring you.”

Dominic walked over, squatted in front of her, and teased her on purpose. “How about Daddy takes you out to play?”

Lilith clenched her teeth. “No!”

“What about fried chicken or McDonald’s?”

The hand holding her pencil trembled, but she held firm. “Not going!”

“What if we go to the mall and buy your favorite Barbie doll?”

Lilith finally broke. She pouted and shouted, “Mommy! Auntie! Daddy is bullying me!”

Dominic chuckled and stopped teasing her.

Isabella and Katherine were sitting on the sofa, both laughing at the scene.

Katherine leaned forward and offered an idea. “Hey, Lily. When your dad gets old and all his teeth fall out, you can make peas for

him to eat!”

Lilith nodded again and again. “Okay. I’ll listen to Auntie.”

Dominic felt his scalp prickle. “Katherine, that’s too much.”

Lilith snorted, shot him a glare, and said, “Hmph! Serves you right for bullying me.”

Dominic apologized without shame, “Alright, Daddy was wrong. Lily, forgive Daddy, okay?”

“That’s more like it!” Only then did she smile smugly and lower her head to continue her homework.

Before anyone realized it, September had arrived.

Lilith had started second grade.

The production line for White Cosmos No. 1 was up and running, and the first batch passed inspection with flying colors. JewelMed’s first official experience store had finished renovations and was set to open on September 12.

A subtle distance had formed between Autumn and him. They barely chatted on WhatsApp anymore. When he called her, her voice remained polite, but it carried a chill that felt distant and restrained.

Dominic did not understand the reason. They were only friends. She was free to treat him however she wished, and he had no right to interfere.

Still, he valued Autumn as a friend. Faced with the change, he could only sigh and try not to dwell on it.

In the blink of an eye, it was September 5.

When Dominic got home that evening, he noticed candles lit along the roadside.

He immediately remembered the old belief that after midnight, the dead were allowed to walk among the living.

He did not take it seriously.

That night, while Dominic slept, a sudden voice broke the silence.

“Mister. Mister!”

He opened his eyes groggily.

“Mister, open the door!”

The childish voice sounded familiar, but he could not place it right away. He rubbed his eyes, got out of bed, and opened the
