Dominic’s face remained expressionless. He wanted to hear what tricks Isabella would try. If she had to die, she would die plainly and completely.
Isabella sobbed. “His name was Benjamin. He was… my neighbor when I was little.”
“A childhood sweetheart,” Dominic sneered and lit another cigarette, irritation sharp in his voice.
Isabella’s face drained of color. She said nothing at first, then continued, “He’s a year younger than me. Our family did business with the Clarks, so I spent time with him. To be honest, I always treated him like a little brother.
“Later, the Clarks ran into trouble. I asked my dad to help them, and Benjamin was grateful to my family. But… one day, he suddenly said he liked me.”
She paused to read Dominic’s expression. His face did not change. Her chest tightened.
“Go on,” Dominic said coldly.
Isabella nodded. “He confessed, but I rejected him. I never saw him that way. Still, he refused to give up and kept following me. I knew it wasn’t right, so I tried to distance myself.
“But then my family’s enemies targeted me. The summer after the SATS, a gunman tried to kill me. I thought I was going to die… but Benjamin jumped in front of me and took the bullet. That’s how I survived. He didn’t…”
Her voice broke as she finished, the story dissolving into sobs.
Dominic listened, then sneered, “I see. A childhood sweetheart, a heroic sacrifice, dying for love. That’s the full set.”
Isabella shuddered. “Honey, he’s dead. I didn’t do anything wrong to you. I really didn’t. Please forgive me.”
Dominic pointed at her, his voice icy. “Forgive you? Do you even deserve to say that word?”
Isabella froze.
“If you had told me this when we got married, everything would have been fine,” Dominic said. “But you hid it all these years. Alexander only shared his eyes, yet you abandoned me again and again. Ha. I lost, and I deserved it. How can the living compete with the dead?”
Isabella’s face crumpled. “I didn’t mean to hide it. Back then, I thought Benjamin was gone forever. I was afraid you’d get jealous, so I kept quiet. Honey, you have to understand…”
Keeping it hidden turned what might have been forgiven into an explosion. Worse still, Alexander appeared at the center of it all. One event followed another, and regret consumed Isabella.
“I can’t understand,” Dominic said, his gaze settling on the five clear handprints on her face. His tone grew calm, almost light.” From the moment you chose to hide this from me, I could never understand.”
Isabella swayed, barely steady on her feet.
Dominic continued, “And when I asked you the last time, you still chose to lie.”
Shame washed over her.
Her confession brought Dominic no relief. It only fed his anger. “That’s enough. Pack your things and get out.”
Anyone would break after learning that the woman beside them for eight years still carried another man in her heart. What made it worse was that the man was dead. There was nowhere to vent the fury.
Isabella stared at him, stunned. “Honey, I really didn’t do anything wrong…”
Dominic scoffed. “Cut the bullshit. Because of a pair of eyes, you were willing to drink the cross–arm toast with him. If he came
