Chapter 375
Dominic said flatly, “I’m Ryan’s friend. I’m taking Max away now. You also need to return Ryan’s workers‘ compensation death benefits to them. Not a single dollar less.”
“What?” the middle–aged woman exclaimed, then snapped, “You’re dreaming! There is no compensation. Leave now, or I’ll call the police!”
“Go ahead and call them,” Dominic said. He wasted no words and stepped forward.
Evita could only move aside. Inside stood a dining table covered with abundant, lavish dishes. A young man frowned and asked, Mom, who’s he?”
Yara hesitated, then said, “He… He’s… my cousin… Danny…”
Evita shouted sharply, “This is outrageous. Absolutely outrageous! Hurry up and call your dad down here. Do you think there’s no man in this house?”
She did not dare call the police. She had taken Ryan’s compensation, and involving the authorities would only invite trouble.
Yara pointed the way, and Dominic followed her down the stairs to the basement.
The lighting was dim. At the end of the stairwell stood an iron–barred gate.
Inside, someone lay curled in the corner. Hearing movement, he spoke weakly. “Uncle William, I’m so hungry…”
Dominic’s gaze froze. Even curled up, the figure looked unusually tall.
At a glance, he was close to 6’6” tall. The basement ceiling did not even reach that height, and he could not stand upright.
Dominic said nothing. He spotted a key beside the gate, pulled Yara close with one arm, and unlocked the door with the other.
Max reacted instantly. He lifted his head, his eyes clear and innocent. The moment he saw Yara in Dominic’s arms, his expression turned savage. He lunged forward. “Let go of my sister!”
His fist shot straight toward Dominic’s face. The force of the punch sent a rush of wind that made Dominic’s expression tighten.
“This guy…‘ Dominic could not afford carelessness. With Yara in his arms, he could not counterattack. He twisted aside to dodge.
Max’s fist slammed into the iron bars, producing a deafening crash.
The power behind that punch was terrifying.
Yara panicked. She flailed her hands and cried, “Max… No… don’t hit… bro’s…”
At her voice, Max stopped at once. “Yara, is he bullying you?”
Tears welled in her eyes as she said, “Max… he didn’t bully me. Max… you hit him… You… You jerk…”
Being scolded by his sister, Max looked wronged.
Dominic quickly said, “It’s fine. Max, have you been living down here this whole time?”
Max nodded. “Danny tried to bully my sister once. I beat him up, and my aunt locked me in here. She said that if I didn’t go in, my sister and I wouldn’t get any food.”
Dominic’s expression turned icy. This family really were beasts.
His uncle’s family lived in a place like this, so they were not poor. They had even taken Ryan’s compensation. No matter how much Max ate, how much could it really amount to?
More importantly, Danny had tried to bully Yara. Dominic did not need to guess what kind of bullying it was. That kind of

behavior was worse than animalistic.
At that moment, an angry shout rang out from upstairs. “Who are you? Who allowed you to open this?”
A man rushed down the stairs, reaching out to slam the door shut.
At the sound of his voice, fear flashed across Max’s face. His body shrank inward. He squeezed his eyes shut and trembled uncontrollably.
Dominic stared at him and said coldly, “Max, your uncle, your aunt, and your cousin all bully your sister. What do you think you should do?”
The instant the words fell, Max’s eyes flew open. The clarity and innocence vanished, replaced by a vicious glare.
The man’s face changed drastically. After all, even at his weakest, Max’s fists carried enough power to make Dominic’s heart
race.
