Max was not smart, but with Ryan gone, his sister was his entire world.

He did not hesitate. He stepped in front of the basement doorway and shielded Yara behind him. His eyes were fierce, like a wolf’s, locked on William at the stairs.

William Hayes felt his heart shudder under that gaze. He clenched his teeth and demanded, “Max! What do you think you’re doing?”

Max did not answer. He moved up the steps. Panic filled William as he backed away.

When they reached the top, Evita had no idea what was happening. She saw Max come up and rushed forward, slapping him hard across the face. “You idiot. Who told you to come up here? Get back down.”

The slap cracked through the room.

Max did not dodge.

She sneered, “Can’t you understand? If you come out again, believe it or not, I’ll lock that crippled sister of yours in there too.”

The instant she said it, Max’s eyes flew wide.

Evita was still ranting when a large hand clamped around her throat and lifted her off the ground like a chick.

She panicked at once, her legs flailing helplessly.

“Let her go!” William roared.

Danny shouted, “Mom! Let go of my mom!”

Max ignored them. He drew back his knee and drove it upward with brutal force.

Evita screamed, her eyes bulging.

Max threw her to the floor and snarled, “Don’t you dare bully my sister.”

Evita curled on the ground, clutching her stomach and groaning. She writhed in pain, saliva spilling from the corner of her mouth.

Dominic came out of the basement with Yara in his arms. He looked at the woman wailing on the floor without a trace of sympathy.

“Don’t… Don’t hit her… you’ll kill her,” Yara said in panic.

Max stood frozen where he was.

William bellowed, “You dared to hit someone. I’m calling the police right now and getting all of you arrested.”

Dominic sneered, “Illegal detention and property seizure. I’d like to see how many years you get. Go ahead. Call them.”

Frankly, even if Max were arrested, his life would likely be better than it was now.

William froze with his phone in hand,

“Enough nonsense,” Dominic said. “Return Ryan’s compensation and money from the house sale. The total is 147,095 dollars.”

That was the number Ryan had given him.

William and Danny both paled.

Danny snarled, “You beat someone and still want money? One idiot and one cripple. What use do they have for money?”

He handed Yara to Max and walked straight over.

Danny shrank back and stammered, “W–What are you trying to do?”

“I’m going to mess you up.” Dominic’s face was cold as he kicked out.

The blow landed cleanly. Danny flew backward and hit the floor hard. His eyes bulged as pain locked his body in a rigid spasm. He twisted on the ground, unable to stop.

“Danny!” William cried as he rushed over and crouched beside him.

“Stop wasting time,” Dominic said. “Pay now, or this ends here.”

William clenched his teeth and looked up. “I don’t have the money. If you have the guts, then kill me.”

“Kill you?” Dominic’s eyes darkened, yet his voice remained eerily calm. “No. If you don’t pay, there is only one outcome. I will wipe out your entire family. You, your son, and your wife will die here today.”

A chill swept through the room.

Cold fear crept up William’s spine.

Dominic turned to Max. “They took the money your brother died for. They tried to force your little sister to her death. What are you going to do?”

At the mention of his brother and sister, Max’s body trembled. His eyes burned red as he said, “I will kill their entire family.”
