Dominic took a deep breath and forced his pounding heart to slow. Then he said, “Then… what do you want to talk about?”

Katherine spoke softly. “Anything is fine. I can’t really fall asleep.”

Dominic gave a dry laugh. “Why can’t you sleep? Is it insomnia?”

“No.” Katherine glanced outside through the crack in the door. Isabella sat on the couch, staring into space.

For the past two days, Isabella had remained in this jittery state.

Katherine chose not to mention her. She let out a quiet sigh and said, “I was thinking about how you’ll get married sooner or later. When that happens, Lily will have a new mom, and she’ll definitely feel awful.”

Dominic fell silent as well.

After a long pause, he said, “That’s why I plan to wait until she’s in college before I get married.”

“It’s not that simple,” Katherine replied. “I saw a reel today. A mother worked so hard to raise her children. When she wanted to remarry, they couldn’t accept it. Even if you wait until Lily is grown, once you have your own ideas, she might still try to stop you.

Katherine said nothing. Her face turned red.

Silence stretched between them.

Katherine’s heart beat faster with each second. At last, she said, “Um… you should think about it carefully. I… I’m going to sleep now.”

At that moment, Isabella pushed the door open and asked casually, “Kathy, who were you talking to just now?”

After a moment of thought, Katherine said, “Maybe he already has his own plan and doesn’t want you involved.”

Isabella let out a soft sigh. “That’s probably it. Now that things have come to this, I want to go find him, but I’m afraid he’ll detɛor me even more. I really don’t know what to do.”

For no clear reason, she wished that Benjamin had not died. If he were still alive, Isabella might have had another choice.
