Dominic looked at Brian. “Tell me.”
Lately, Brian and Max had been inseparable. Given Max’s size and strength, it seemed unlikely anyone could overpower him so easily.
“Mr. Fleming, Max and I went to see Yara today. Everything was fine at first. Then a few strange men showed up out of nowhere and tried to take her away. Max and I rushed over. We’d just knocked one of them down when the others changed tactics. They said Max had to go with them, or they’d hurt Yara.”
Bruises marred Brian’s face, clear evidence of a fight. Anxiety roughened his voice. “One of them got close to the hospital bed with a knife. Max had no choice. He stopped resisting and let them take him.”
Dominic’s heart sank. ‘Who would dare pull something like that?‘
This had happened in a hospital. They had barged in, attempted an abduction, and even brandished a knife.
He lowered his voice. “Besides taking Max, did they say anything else?”
“They mentioned you,” Brian replied. “They told you to go to the west docks at eight tonight. There’s a large warehouse there. They said you should go settle your grudges.”
Instead of reacting with alarm, Dominic felt a flicker of relief and let out a quiet breath. “Yara, Max will be fine. I’ll bring him back tonight.”
Tears pooled in Yara’s eyes. She clutched Dominic’s shirt and choked out, “M–Mr. Fleming… let’s call the police. If you go… it’s dangerous…”
She had been diligent with her rehabilitation and medication, preparing for surgery. Everything had been stable until today. The sudden violence had terrified her. Yet the moment she saw Dominic, her fear shifted into worry for him.
Max mattered to her, but she could not bear the thought of anything happening to Dominic.
Dominic patted her shoulder with a reassuring smile. “Yara, they can’t touch me. Don’t worry.”
She bit her lip and nodded.
As if remembering something, Dominic pulled out his phone. The screen lit up with a string of missed calls. Earlier, while hiding in the closet, he had set his phone to silent and forgotten to switch it back. He had spent the entire afternoon with
Katherine, and he had not checked it once.
A faint trace of guilt crossed his face. He turned to Brian. “Go to the hospital and get your injuries treated. I’ll handle the rest.”
Brian hesitated. “Shouldn’t we call the police?”
“No,” Dominic said calmly.
Something about today’s events did not sit right with him. He had a suspicion, but he needed confirmation.
“Alright.” Brian did not press further. He took a folding wheelchair from the trunk and drove off.
Yara remained in Dominic’s arms, trying to wipe away her tears. Her arms would not cooperate. Even that simple motion looked awkward and strained.
Dominic settled her into the wheelchair, pulled tissues from the car, and gently dried her face. He smiled at her. “You’ll stay at my place for now. Tonight, I’ll bring Max back.”
The steadiness in his voice soothed her. She nodded again.
A flicker of jealousy crossed Isabella’s face. “Honey, who is she? Aren’t you going to introduce us?”

Without looking up, Dominic replied, “She’s Yara. My sworn sister.”
At the sound of Isabella’s voice, Yara lifted her head. Shock filled her eyes, followed by a deep sense of inadequacy.
Isabella was stunning. Even if Yara recovered completely, she would never look like that.
She gripped the hem of her clothes and stammered, “I… I’m Yara. Hello. Nice to meet you.”
Isabella nodded, then turned to Dominic. “I understand what you were discussing. I’ll arrange for people to go to the docks and bring back the man named Max.”
