Dominic suddenly clenched his fists. A strange feeling rose within him. Although the woman seemed to be speaking to Jessica, the words felt directed at him. It almost sounded like a threat.
“Mom, what are you talking about? Who’s trying to hurt me?” Jessica snapped, irritation creeping into her voice.
Linda chuckled softly. “Haha, then I must have misspoken. A mother worries when her child is far away. You’re all the way out in Skyline City. Sometimes, I worry so much that I can’t even sleep at night.”
Jessica’s expression softened. She realized she might have been too sensitive. Her mother was probably just worried about her. Dominic was not a bad person. He would be her future husband, and that alone made her feel protected.
The thought filled Jessica with quiet warmth.
Her cheeks flushed slightly as she said, “Mom, I want to take a nap now, so I won’t talk anymore.”
Linda hummed in acknowledgment and added casually, “Someone has already spoken to the family about the Pierces‘ situation. Your dad found out, and he was pretty upset.”
Jessica frowned. “Whatever.”
Linda smiled with indulgent patience. “It’s fine. Just remember next time. If something like this happens, let the family know in advance.”
Jessica remained silent for a few seconds before replying wearily, “Got it.”
After that, she did not wait for Linda to respond. She hung up.
Only then did Jessica look at Dominic. A trace of nervousness appeared in her
eyes.
“My mom was just worried that some bad people might bully me,” she said quickly. “She wasn’t talking about you, Dominic, so don’t get mad.”
‘I know exactly who she meant…‘ Dominic thought, but he only smiled. He reached out and gently stroked Jessica’s hair.
“I’m not mad,” he said. “She’s your mother. It’s normal for her to worry about you.”
Jessica nodded rapidly, like a chick pecking at grain. Then she added, “And don’t listen to her. I’m not going to be with Shaun, so don’t worry.”
Her anxious expression warmed Dominic’s heart. He deliberately exaggerated his reaction and laughed. “Haha, I was a little jealous just now. But since you said that, everything’s fine.”
Jessica finally smiled. ‘Dominic being jealous means he cares about me…‘
She took Dominic’s hand again and placed it on top of her head, her eyes curving into crescent shapes as she smiled in
satisfaction.
Jessica’s hair felt so soft that Dominic had the strange impression he was petting a cat.
They continued chatting for a while. Dominic glanced at his watch and only then realized it was already 4:00 p.m.
“I need to go pick up Lily,” he said.
“Mm.” Jessica nodded, a hint of disappointment in her voice. “Then be careful on the way, Dominic.”
Dominic smiled. “No worries. I’m an experienced driver now.”
As he stood to leave, Jessica suddenly reached out and held his hand. Her voice dropped to a whisper. “Dominic, I’m so scared. When you come back from Eastmere, you might ignore me…”

She had read many stories like that. Two people seemed perfectly fine, but once one of them left for a while, they returned completely changed. Besides, Katherine would also be on this trip.
The thought filled Jessica with an unexplainable sense of anxiety.
Dominic turned back and smiled. “It’s not impossible…”
Jessica froze. Tears quickly welled in her eyes.
Dominic chuckled and winked at her. “If I come back from Eastmere and you’re already married, then I’ll just be jealous and sad. I won’t talk to you.”
