Katherine froze, disbelief written across her face. “So… the problem is actually on my side?”
Dominic nodded, his expression grave. “You knew I’d drunk two bottles of liquor. In that state, as long as it was a woman… Wait. Isabella looks so much like you. Mistaking her for you is completely understandable. And you let me drink that much but didn’t take care of me. That’s not what a qualified girlfriend would do.
“So, in summary, my conclusion is this. In this matter, you bear primary responsibility, and I bear secondary responsibility. Of course, given our relationship, I’ll take a step back. We’ll split it fifty–fifty. No one blames the other. We’re even.”
After delivering his argument in one breath, Dominic watched Katherine’s reaction closely.
She listened in a daze, almost foolish in her stillness. At first, it sounded reasonable. The more she thought about it, however,. the harder it became to refute.
“This…‘ Katherine reinained stunned for a long moment.
Just as Dominic began to think he had muddled through, she suddenly burst into dazzling laughter, like flowers blooming all at
once.
Now it was Dominic’s turn to freeze.
Still laughing, she said, “It’s a waste you didn’t become a lawyer. I almost believed you.”
Dominic gritted his teeth. “Don’t you think what I said makes sense?”
“That’s not how reasoning works.” Katherine sighed softly. “In situations like this, only the result matters. Suppose—and I’m only saying suppose–that after we got together, I slept with someone else and later claimed I mistook him for you. Would you forgive me?”
She let out a cold sneer. “Besides, I know your limits. I’ve been drunk before, so I know how it feels. Are you really telling me that for over an hour–maybe longer–you truly believed Isabella was me the entire time?”
The question struck with precision.
Dominic fell silent, unable to respond.
He knew the truth. By the latter half, he had already sensed something was wrong. But by then, the car had already been on the highway. Under the haze of alcohol, there had been no way to stop.
Seeing his silence, Katherine shook her head, disappointment clear in her eyes. “Hah. Men.”
She stood and moved to leave the private room.
Dominic exhaled. His attempt at persuasion had clearly failed.
He glanced at the table and called after her, “Hey, aren’t you going to eat any of this food?”
Katherine didn’t look back. “You finish it. Don’t waste it. Thanks.”
Dominic had no intention of eating. He pulled himself together and quickly went after her.
At the restaurant entrance, Katherine frowned. “Why are you still stopping me?”
Dominic raised a finger. “One thing.”
“Say it.”
