Dominic quickly pulled his phone away.
Oliver raged on the line for over a minute before pausing to shout, “Dominic, are you even listening?”
Dominic’s temper flared. “Oliver, have you lost your mind? What’s gotten into you today?”
Oliver ground his teeth and hissed, “Don’t play dumb with me. Where the hell were you today?”
“Me?” Dominic shot back. “What did I do today? I just-
His voice faltered mid–sentence, as if he had suddenly realized why Oliver was acting so aggressively.
A sneer crept into Oliver’s voice. “What, gone quiet now? Can’t even say it out loud? Tell me, are you even human?”
“What? The signal’s bad over here…”
Olive: froze, then erupted. “Don’t give me that crap, Dominic!”
“Huh? What did you say? I really can’t hear you. Hello? Hello? Can you hear me?”
“Dominic, you—”
“Eh, weird. This crappy Fruit phone really has terrible call quality. Next time, I’ll support local…”
Oliver heard Dominic muttering before the call abruptly cut off.
He clenched his teeth and tried to call back, only to hear, “The number you’ve dialed cannot be reached…”
“Dominic, just you wait! If I don’t tear you apart, I’m a dog!” His eyes burned red with fury. He nearly hurled the phone.
For a fiercely protective brother like Oliver, Dominic had crossed the line. Even if he could not win, he had to try. It was a matter of principle.
Meanwhile, Dominic ended the call and quickly switched his phone to airplane mode, letting out a long breath.
No matter how he looked at it, he was clearly in the wrong.
He pushed the thought aside. If Oliver kept pestering him, he would deal with it later, even if it meant taking another beating.
He looked up at an old apartment building. This was the address Sophia had given him, Elias‘ home.
Dominic checked the saved address on his phone and headed upstairs.
He stopped at one of the doors and knocked.
After a moment, there was no response.
‘Maybe no one’s home.‘ Still, he knocked again.
The door opened, revealing a disheveled man. His hair was tangled like a bird’s nest, his chin covered in stubble, and his clothes were dirty and foul–smelling, as if he had neglected himself for a long time.
His hollow eyes settled on Dominic. “Can I help you?”
Dominic glanced past him and gave a faint smile. “I’m a friend of Sophia’s. She asked me to check on you. I also have something to tell you.”
At the mention of Sophia’s name, Elias‘ eyes lit up. “Come in, quickly.”

He stepped aside to let Dominic enter.
Sophia followed close behind, her face bright with excitement. “Mr. Fleming, you finally came!”
Dominic ignored her and walked into the apartment, taking in his surroundings.
The space was small and cluttered with trash. Takeout boxes covered the floor, giving the entire place a chaotic, neglected look.
The small sofa in the living room was one of the few places to sit.
Elias led him over and asked, his voice trembling, “May I have your name? And… does Soph have something she wants to tell me?”
“My last name is Fleming. You can call me Mr. Fleming.”
Dominic pulled out a cigarette and offered one to him. “Take your time. There’s no rush. First, tell me about your situation with Sophia. I haven’t had much contact with her, so I don’t fully understand your relationship.”
At this, pain flickered across Elias‘ eyes. He suddenly raised his hand and slapped himself hard across the face, his voice breaking as he choked back sobs. “It’s all my fault. If I had known sooner… If I had known sooner…”
Sophia instinctively moved to stop him, but she could not. She could only watch as Elias punished himself, her eyes filled with pain!
