memories of his time with Sophia surfaced one by one.
During his sophomore year, Elias used to go to the library alone. On one such day, as he sat quietly, a voice broke the silence.” Excuse me, is anyone sitting here?”
He turned and saw a girl with a gentle smile. The warmth of it struck him at once. He stammered, “N–No one…”
That was how they met. From that moment on, they began to grow close.
Within half a year, they became a couple. Throughout the rest of their university life, they were the pair everyone envied.
Whenever Elias and Sophia looked into each other’s eyes, they saw only love.
After graduation, neither of their families had much money, so they rented a small apartment and worked hard. Their life was simple, yet warm and happy.
If nothing unexpected had happened, they would have spent their lives together and grown old side by side.
But the universe had other plans.
One day, Sophia called him out of the blue. “Ah, I think I’m dying!”
Elias froze at work. He knew she had gone to the hospital for a checkup, and panic seized him. “Don’t scare me. What did the results say?”
Sophia laughed. “Late–stage rectal cancer!”
The words struck him like a blow to the chest. His eyes reddened at once. “Where are you?”
Then she giggled. “Hehe, you didn’t really believe me, did you? You big dummy!”
Elias stood stunned for a moment, then burst out. “Soph, I’m serious. You’re never allowed to joke like that again!”
“Mm–hmm, I know. Come home early tonight. I’ll give you a massage.”
At that, his fatigue vanished, replaced by a surge of energy.
After graduation, he had struggled to find a good job. For Sophia’s sake, he took work at a construction site. She felt sorry for
him, so she massaged him every night. Those moments became what he treasured most.
One night, as they lay in bed, Sophia asked softly, “What if I really got cancer? We don’t have money. We couldn’t afford
treatment.”
“You’re saying that again?” Elias frowned, irritation rising. “If you die, I’ll find a new girlfriend right away and forget you completely.”
Sophia fell silent.
Neither of them mentioned it again.
Less than ten days later, Elias returned home from work and stopped short.
Several things were missing from the apartment. Most of them were Sophia’s. Along with her belongings, she was gone.
Alarmed, he called her at once.
The phone rang for a long time before she answered.
