Theodore told his story, and Dominic listened in silence.
When Theodore was very young, his father had an affair. Before he even turned five, the man abandoned him and his mother and vanished without a trace.
The plump restaurant owner was Fiona Davis, a strong woman who refused to break down when her husband left. She didn’t cry or make a scene. Instead, she carried the weight of motherhood alone and raised her son the best she could.
Over the years, Fiona saved enough money to open a small restaurant, hoping to leave something behind for Theodore..
But Theodore had always been rebellious. He never knew the truth about his father’s abandonment. He believed it was his mother’s fault–that she had driven his father away. That misunderstanding grew into resentment.
As he grew older, the rebellion deepened. Fiona tried to correct him, sometimes through harsh scolding or beatings, but nothing worked. He stopped studying, fell in with street thugs, picked fights, and bullied classmates.
Eventually, the school expelled him.
That night, Fiona wept as she reprimanded him in anger and despair. Enraged and humiliated, Theodore shoved her away and ran into the night.
“What happened after that?” Dominic asked calmly, lighting a cigarette.
Fear and regret clouded Theodore’s eyes. He hesitated for a long moment before speaking. “I met a guy named Harvey. He said he could take me somewhere to make a lot of money. But when I got into the car, they tried to blindfold me. I refused and said I wanted to go home. They knocked me out. When I woke up, I was inside some
He swallowed hard before continuing, “They made me scam people for money. If I didn’t, they beat me. I didn’t even know how to scam anyone. I couldn’t get a single dollar in two weeks. Then one day, they started whispering that I wasn’t any use to them.
“I thought they were going to let me go. I didn’t know that was when the nightmare would truly begin.”
Theodore glanced down at his body, pain filling his eyes. Dominic already suspected how the story ended and shook his head slowly.
“In a filthy shed, they cut out my organs. I passed out from the pain over and over. Then one time, I woke up and didn’t feel anything anymore… that’s when I realized I was already dead.
“They buried my body somewhere random. For a long time, I couldn’t leave. Then last month, I finally broke free. After wandering for a while, I found my way home.”
By the time he finished, Theodore was shaking violently, his face pale with sorrow and fear.
“So, what do you want to do most right now?” Dominic asked evenly.
Theodore’s eyes drifted toward the plump woman in the restaurant. “I just want to call her ‘Mom,‘ tell her that her son’s back… and that he’ll never leave again.”
Dominic smiled faintly. “You can.”
“What?” Theodore looked startled.

“Is that all you want to do?” Dominic asked. “Don’t you want to stay with her a little longer?”
Conflict flickered in Theodore’s eyes. After a long pause, he shook his head. “I don’t deserve to. I failed her.”
Dominic nodded. “Alright then. Go tell her.”
He stood up. When Theodore hesitated, Dominic said, “Go on. What are you waiting for?”
Theodore blinked and hurried to his feet. “Right.”
Dominic walked to the restaurant door.
