Dominic gave a faint, bitter smile. He knew this would break Lilith’s heart, but he had no choice.

“Lily,” he said gently. “Mommy will always be your mommy, and Daddy will always be your daddy. Even if we separate, no matter who you miss, Daddy or Mommy, we’ll both be there for you right away.”

After the divorce, Dominic couldn’t and had no right to take away Isabella’s place as a mother.

Upon hearing that, Lilith’s expression softened. In a small voice, she said, “But I want Daddy and Mommy to be together.”

Dominic shook his head. “There are many things in this world we can’t control. It’s like how you like Ms. Poppy from preschool. When you grow up and move on to elementary school, she won’t be your teacher anymore. Do you understand?”

Lilith nodded, only half understanding.

Then Dominic asked quietly, “If Daddy and Mommy split up and don’t live together anymore, who would you want to live with?”

She thought for a moment. “I’ll stay with Daddy.”

Dominic’s eyes brightened. “Why? Don’t you like Mommy?”

“I do!” Lilith said without hesitation. “I like both Daddy and Mommy the same.”

He smiled faintly. “But Mommy has lots of money, a big house, and a beautiful car. Daddy has nothing. Daddy only has Lily.”

Her serious tone caught him off guard. His eyes turned red, and he quickly looked away. “Did you finish your homework?”

“Yes! And I checked it more than once. Look, Daddy!”

She proudly handed him her notebook. Dominic wiped the corner of his eye, then took it and flipped through the pages carefully.

It was already nine when Lilith fell asleep. Dominic sat on the couch for a while before heading out. Lighting a cigarette, he started his old Audi and drove out of Riverside Residence. The home’s security was solid; even if Lilith woke up, she couldn’t open the door, and every window had security bars. He wasn’t worried.

He smoked as he drove slowly through the quiet streets. For the first time that night, he felt calm. Then, suddenly, a shadow darted past–just a flash–and only a pair of taillights remained.

Dominic frowned. It looked like a van, and he thought he saw the words ‘Dragon Customs‘ printed on its side. A few blocks later, he spotted the bright sign for ‘Love Me Blue Cheese‘ and pulled over.

As he stepped out, a voice spoke beside him.

“Sir, can you see me?”

A young man stood nearby, his tone cautious, eyes full of hope.

Dominic looked at him and smiled slightly. “What do you think?”
