Dominic set the dishes on the table and stepped outside. Sure enough, Isabella’s purple Porsche sat in the driveway with a fresh scratch on its left front–clearly scraped not long ago.
Isabella lifted the rushing Lilith into her arms and smiled at the old man. “Grandpa, we had some things to take care of this morning, so we came to see you first.”
Harold chuckled warmly. “Dominic’s cooking. Sit down and rest a bit.”
Relief washed over Isabella. Her husband hadn’t told Harold about their problems after all.
Of course he wouldn’t. Harold was already a hundred years old. If he knew, he couldn’t do anything and would probably lose sleep over it.
Dominic walked back in, a slight frown on his face. “What happened to the car?”
Isabella waved lightly, keeping her tone bright. “Nothing serious–just a little scrape.”
In truth, the drive should’ve taken an hour. She’d made it in half that time.
Dominic nodded. “The food’s ready. Since you’re here, let’s eat together.”

Dominic brought out the dishes, and the four of them shared a pleasant meal. Isabella chatted lightly; Dominic responded with polite ease.
When they finished, Harold smiled. “Lily, do you want to go see the bird nests?”
Lilith’s eyes lit up. “Yes, please, Great–grandpa!”
“Then let’s go!” he said, taking her hand as they headed out.
Silence settled once they were gone. Only Dominic and Isabella remained in the house.
After a long pause, Isabella spoke. “Grandpa probably noticed. You were too obvious.”
Dominic lit a cigarette, irritation flickering in his eyes. “You shouldn’t have come.”
“You’re my husband,” she said firmly. “You and our daughter came back to your hometown. How could I not come? You should’ve woken me up so we could come together.”
“Don’t say that again. We’re getting divorced.” His voice was flat.
Isabella shook her head. “I don’t agree. I won’t sign the papers.
“That’s meaningless,” Dominic replied. “You’ve already seen the lawsuit. The court date’s July 15th from now.”
20 days
Isabella’s pupils trembled. Pain spread through her chest. She stepped closer, voice soft and pleading. “Honey, do
