Miles York spoke in a soft, comforting tone. "Jade, no one wanted this to happen. Don't blame yourself."
When he lifted his gaze to Quinn Avery, his eyes were filled with nothing but profound indifference.
"Quinn, it was my oversight that day. I never should have let you wear that necklace. If you hadn't been wearing such expensive jewelry, you wouldn't have been mugged in the first place."
Quinn's heart turned completely cold. A heavy, suffocating wave of despair gathered in her chest, making her feel as though the blood had frozen in her veins.
Jade's tone was airy and light. "Quinn, honestly, you shouldn't have been so stubborn. If the necklace was snatched, you should have just let it go. Money is just a worldly possession, but life is precious. You didn't need to fight those men to the death. Miles can always just buy you another set later."
Jade deliberately painted the violent thugs she had hired as ordinary street robbers, desperately trying to cover up her own crime.
She was banking on the fact that Quinn had absolutely no evidence to prove who had orchestrated the attack.
And, of course, Miles agreed with Jade. "Quinn, I wouldn't have blamed you for losing the jewelry. You didn't need to risk your life over it. I assume the injuries on your palms are from you trying to snatch it back?"
Quinn's hands instinctively curled into tight fists. The stinging pain grounded her, bringing back a fraction of her shattered composure.
She ruthlessly suppressed the raging fire in her chest, fighting the overwhelming urge to lunge forward and tear the vicious mask right off Jade's face.
She felt dizzy and suffocated, as if she were sinking into a bottomless swamp, completely drained of energy.
A moment ago, there had been a brief struggle in her mind.
If she told him that the thugs were hired by someone, and that the person pulling the strings was Jade, would Miles even bother to investigate?
No.
He would only accuse her of being malicious and paranoid, claiming she was trying to smear the woman he cherished with empty lies.
Remembering how desperately she had tried to defend herself in the past, remembering his coldness, his disgust, and how he constantly favored his childhood sweetheart while berating and belittling her, Quinn finally gave up.
She suffocated the impulse before it could escape her lips.
