"AJ, what did you even do with all that money?"
AJ rubbed his neck, looking incredibly awkward, and refused to answer.
"Did you spend it on Chloe Preston?"
At the mention of Chloe, AJ's expression instantly soured. "Don't talk nonsense, Quinn. Chloe doesn't care about a little bit of cash!"
Quinn swallowed the bitter sorrow rising in her chest, her voice laced with exhaustion.
"Then what did you do with it?"
This time, AJ answered. "I... I invested it. The business went under."
"What business?"
Bombarded with questions, AJ lost his temper. "Why are you interrogating me? I'm not a criminal!"
He glared at his sister accusingly. "Did you pick a fight with Mr. York's family today?"
"Didn't I tell you to just endure it while you're living here? Why would you argue with them? Pissing him off does you absolutely no good."
The agonizing betrayal twisted sharply in Quinn's chest. She had been so terrified that Miles would sue him or use him as leverage.
And yet, her own brother was taking Miles's side, blaming her, scolding her.
This was the family she had tried so hard to protect?
Not only that, but he had been going behind her back, begging Miles for money time and time again.
She had foolishly believed that she still had a tiny shred of dignity left in front of Miles.
But her wonderful brother had already taken her pride and dragged it through the mud more times than she could count.
Giving him one final, deadened look, she refused to waste another word on him and walked away.
Unnerved by her icy reaction, AJ chased after her, shouting down the hall.
"Quinn! I am your brother! When I talk, you listen. Stop throwing a tantrum!"
"Hey! Are you even listening to me?"
"Can you stop being so damn stubborn?"
"You're the only one who's going to suffer for this. I'm just looking out for you!"
...
Quinn shut out the noise and returned to her small room.
